Eneco

All for sustainability. Sustainability for all

Energy company Eneco and WWF Climate Savers have announced they will strengthen their collaboration, with a renewed partnership which will continue until 2017.

The partnership was first formed at the end of 2010, when Eneco Group became WWF’s first Climate Savers partner in the Netherlands. Companies that participate in this international climate programme initiated by WWF commit to strict agreements with respect to reduction of their CO2 emissions and the production of clean energy for their own use and for their customers. In the new agreement, the conditions are even stricter than before.

Clean energy sources
At present, the supply of energy has a major impact on the climate and, therefore, on nature and biodiversity. Eneco and WWF share the view that enhancing the sustainability of the energy supply is urgently required. To achieve this, it is necessary to make a switch to cleaner and inexhaustible energy sources and to focus on reducing energy consumption.

Following the work in connection with the Climate Savers programme, Eneco, WWF and the research company Ecofys launched the ‘One Planet Thinking’ development project. The purpose of this project is to develop a methodology that enables companies to link their efforts to enhance sustainability to the limits of our planet. Eneco and WWF strive to involve more companies and research institutes in this development project.

Sustainable forestry
Another element of the agreement relates to the use of biomass, in the form of stimulating a higher level of ambition within the bioenergy sector, in which Eneco sets an example with respect to the use of certified biomass (FSC or equivalent) and interesting bioenergy projects. Furthermore, WWF and Eneco strive towards the implementation of these stricter criteria as the European standard.

Reducing deforestation is also part of the agreement. The financial instrument REDD+ is used to stimulate the maintenance of natural forests. Eneco strives to stimulate and realise a sound market for trading CO2 certificates that contributes to the maintenance of natural forests. WWF is working on appropriate rules of conduct with respect to the protection of natural areas and reducing deforestation in priority areas, such as the Amazon and the forests on Borneo.
