Canon - WWF Conservation Partner

Canon Europe and WWF have been working together since 1998 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, when it became WWF's first Conservation Partner.

Canon uses its imaging expertise to help WWF record the state of the environment and climate change and to use images to disseminate these findings as widely as possible.

WWF and Canon believe that together they can make an important contribution to conservation by raising awareness of the fragility and beauty of nature through images.

Summary of the partnership

Canon’s funding has allowed WWF to develop, maintain and grow the WWF-Canon Global Photo Network database into a superb image collection readily available online to its global offices.

This has made an enormous impact on the way the WWF network can communicate about its work, and the proposed renewed partnership includes a plan to further develop the use of images to communicate about its conservation priorities.

WWF has also been able to commission professional photographers to cover and illustrate its programmes and projects, and to further enhance its image collection.

In addition to supporting the photo collection, Canon Europe has supported projects in the Arctic, as it is one part of the world where the consequences of climate change are the most visual. Through images, stories, projects and activities in the Arctic, the partners wish to capture and communicate the state of the environment.

Currently, Canon Europe continues to sponsor the WWF-Canon Global Photo Network database as well as WWF’s conservation work in the Arctic, including sponsoring a number of expeditions. The objective of these expeditions is to assess the best future management options for the area of Arctic summer sea ice that is projected to remain the longest. Information about the expeditions can be found here: the expedition website
