Call for Expression of Interest for consultants: "of the main Financial Institutions with significant seafood portfolios, determine to what degree they are investing in MSC certified fisheries”

Posted on: 21st March 2014

Closing date for submission proposal: 31st March 2014 at 17:00 CET

Contracting organisation: WWF Smart Fishing Initiative

Procedure: Interested parties should submit a brief proposal outlining their suitability for the assignment together with an estimated total budget, timeline and brief description of proposed methods to Robin Davies, email: rdavies@wwfint.org

Background: Seafood supply-chain industries, as well as global fisheries, are strongly dependent on financial support, be it by credit lenders or investors. The often unregulated and un-transparent global financial systems and its key players allow unsustainable fishing practices to continue. Sustainability is highly topical and the financial crisis has renewed the appreciation for long-term thinking.

Corporate Social Responsiblity (CSR) policies are slowly finding their ways into the finance system, and the time appears right to develop a strategy aimed at key financial institutions to help improve the sustainability standards of entities that provide credit to the fishing industry. To this end, WWF’s global Smart Fishing Initiative (SFI) seeks to understand the degree to which Financial Institutions (FIs) invest in Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)/non-MSC certified fisheries, or indeed have this as a pre-requisite for investing.
