Paraguay

Work started in 2012 with the series of conferences and workshops named ‘Green Economy and Sustainability: implications in Paraguay’. The two conferences targeted the political sector and the productive sector and provided a major opportunity for WWF to introduce GE and our vision into a broader discussion.

In the context of Paraguary the local team see GE as an opportunity for the country - and Latin America in general – to improve human wellbeing and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. The local team has a particular focus on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) through Sustainable Forest Management (REDD+).

There is a push to promote carbon emissions trading (included in a draft for a climate change national law), as well as the development of a protocol for Payment for Environmental Services (PES).

In a parallel initiative, WWF Paraguay is part of a new project (financed by USAID) to create an alliance with the private sector to reduce deforestation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with beef and soy production in Paraguay.
