Cities are mega-consumers
Central and local governments are important as consumers, since their purchasing, when salaries are excluded, make up 6-10% of the world’s gross national product. Some cities have been forerunners in developing green purchasing regulations that, given their size as consumers, has an effect on the market. The last decade has also seen a tremendous development of complementary currencies, some of which are designed to promote a sustainable lifestyle and strengthen the local community.
