Promoting certified sustainable palm oil

WWF is encouraging retailers and manufacturers to purchase certified sustainable palm oil produced according to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) standards.

Certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO), which is produced according to the standards established by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), provides assurance that valuable tropical forests have not been cleared and that environmental and social safeguards have been met during the oil's production

Sales of sustainable palm oil has risen more than 500% over the last five years - from 0.4 million tonnes in 2009 to 2.478 tonnes in 2014. While market uptake is still slow (see the WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard 2013), 47% of certified palm oil was purchased as such in 2014. 18% of world's palm oil production has been RSPO certified as of October 2014.

WWF is working to encourage retailers and manufacturers of everyday products to support the RSPO and only source certified sustainable palm oil – and so help to slow down deforestation and the disappearance of some of Earth’s most amazing and threatened wildlife, including elephants and orangutans, as well as put a cap on climate change.

What is WWF asking from companies buying palm oil?

  • Join the RSPO and become an active member.
  • Commit to sourcing 100% CSPO from Mass Balance or Segregated supply chains by the end of 2015 at the latest.
  • Cover all their palm oil use with CSPO from any of the supply chain options
  • Start investing in traceable supply chains of CSPO
  • Be transparent in their palm oil use.
  • For retailers, go beyond own-brand commitments and take responsibility for making sure all the palm oil they sell is sustainable
  • Raise awareness of the RSPO and CSPO globally
  • Buy from certified RSPO member growers that are going beyond the basic requirements of the RSPO Principals and Criteria (P&C’s) such as the Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG).
