There is a tiger crisis – as few as 3,200 tigers are left in the wild.
There is also an opportunity. 2010 is not only the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese calendar. It is also a crucial moment for tiger conservation, with high profile policy meetings which will give world leaders the perfect platform to make the right moves, to save the tiger and so much more.The political process culminates with the International Tiger Forum, or tiger summit, from Nov. 21-24 in St. Petersburg, Russia hosted by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. WWF is helping to organize the summit.
At the summit, heads of government are expected to endorse the Global Tiger Recovery Programme (GTRP) and sign a Leaders’ Declaration, committing to take actions to double the number of tigers in the wild by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.
