A vital part of the entire adaptation planning process is to evaluate the success or failure of any management actions, and to use lessons learned to refine your own activities and also contribute to wider adaptation knowledge.
Monitoring and evaluation of adaptation measures is also essential in order to make sure that the interventions are effective, cost-efficient, achieve the desired results and are sustainable. Adaptation planning is not a one-off activity and as more information about climate change scenarios and impacts becomes available, plans may need to change.
Monitoring should be planned before implementation:
- What questions do you want to answer?
- What data will be used to answer those questions?
- Who will collect the data and when?
- Who will analyze the data and report the results?
