Esta práctica inspiradora de REDD+ pone de relieve el proceso participativo que utilizó el gobierno regional para recoger información validada sobre los patrones de deforestación y desarrollar un mapa de carbono forestal para la región de Madre de Dios, en la Amazonia peruana.
Este proceso colaborativo tuvo éxito gracias al enfoque sobre el fortalecimiento de la capacidad técnica e institucional del gobierno regional y la sociedad civil.

Flowing Rivers, Full Bellies: The case for freshwater conservation to achieve food security is the title of a publication presenting five cases in managing water ecosystems to guarantee the maintenance of the ecosystem and the food production.

One example that comes from the Amazon is the management of fisheries in the lower floodplains - also called varzeas - in the Brazilian Amazon. Although many different species can be found in the wide seasonal lakes formed in the varzeas, the iconic pirarucu fish (Arapaima gigas), one of the largest freshwater fish species in the world, is the most sought after because of its high commercial value.

REDD+ Developments in the Guianas

Since 2007, one particular ecosystem service provided by forests has commanded attention worldwide: the sequestration of carbon. The uptake of CO2 by trees mitigates the devastating effects of climate change caused by the global rise of temperatures in the atmosphere through the ever increasing burning of fossil fuels.

REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) offers incentives for managing forests to reduce carbon emissions and to maintain the fullest range of values such as biodiversity, water supply, soil protection, economic productivity, sustenance and indigenous territories, thereby bringing multiple benefits for ecosystems and people.

This WWF publication REDD+ developments in the Guianas showcases the evolution of the concept of REDD+ in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, and the numerous activities undertaken in these countries.

WWF Living Amazon Initiative presents the publication Rio 92, what did it lead to? Rio+ 20, what will it lead to? about the 20 years between the two conferences: United Nations Conference on Environment and Development – the Rio 92 –or ECO 92 and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development – the Rio+20.

Published in Portuguese, English and Spanish, the aim of this publication is to make a contribution by putting forward ideas and proposals in the form of statements and lessons learned by those interviewed and underscore the issues and solutions for the future of the Amazon, Brazil and Latin America.

All those interviewed, whether from the market sector, the third sector, the political field, the academic world or from civil society at large, in Brazil or in other countries, were involved in some way with the Rio 92; all of them address sustainable development in their present day lives and/or are preparing to take an active part in the Rio+20.

This mosaic of testimony composes a critical vision of what the world has been doing over the last 20 years and what prospects may be delineated by the Rio+20. The sharply critical points of view in no way detract from the importance of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, quite the contrary, they serve to highlight the importance of this historical moment; no less valuable than the one in 1992.

One in ten known species on Earth lives in the Amazon. Its forests contain 90-140 billion metric tons of carbon, the release of even a portion of which would accelerate global warming significantly.

Over 30 million people living in the Amazon depend on its resources and services – not to mention many millions more living as far away as North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, but still within the Amazon's far-reaching climatic influence.

Rapidly expanding global markets for meat, soy and others, and the imminent realization of large-scale transportation and energy infrastructure projects coupled with poor planning are contributing to deforestation and increased pressure on the natural resources and environmental services upon which millions of people depend. Increased temperatures and decreased precipitation caused by global warming will exacerbate these trends.

Although WWF's presence in the region has been key to many conservation results over the years, it is with the articulation of the Living Amazon Initiative in 2008 that WWF has been able to bring together 40 years of experience as part of a unified front to address the challenges to the Amazon Biome as a whole.

Over the next years WWF will develop far reaching and powerful partnerships with governments, civil society, and the private sector to promote the transformational processes needed to foster a common vision for an ecologically healthy Amazon Biome that maintains its environmental and cultural contribution to local peoples, the countries of the region, and the world, within a framework of social equity, inclusive economic development and global responsibility.

The Living Amazon Initiative

Given that the forces shaping the Amazon Biome extend far beyond a local context and know no political boundaries, we can no longer work on pieces of the puzzle in isolation from one another. Rather, we must address the biome as a whole in order to secure the viability of the entire system.

Therefore, although WWF's presence in the region has been key to many conservation results over the years, it is with the articulation of the Living Amazon Initiative in 2008 that WWF has been able to bring together 40 years of experience as part of a unified blueprint to address the challenges to the Amazon Biome as a whole.

The primary objective of developing the WWF Living Amazon Initiativeis thus to redouble our efforts as an organization on a scale equivalent and relevant to the scope of the problem at hand.

Land and resource use are primarily motivated by economic interests ranging from the large-scale needs of extensive landowners and industrial-scale investors to those of subsistence farmers. While demand is a key driver for habitat conversion, how this process plays out spatially is largely determined by the rules for land occupation (or lack thereof). In the Amazon, where a significant proportion of the lands are still considered to be public and undesignated, land grabbing and illegal encroachment are rampant. The means most often used to lay claim to an area is to deforest it, and then show it to be "productive" by sowing crops or raising cattle.

This undervaluation is partly linked to insufficient information about the current and potential economic benefits derived from the resources and services provided by the Amazon's natural ecosystems, especially when compared to the large, tangible returns provided by other land uses.
