Little favours

We have an exhibition of large posters with photos, telling the story of "hatsake" (slash-and-burn deforestation), its destructive consequences and WWF's work with the aerial surveillance. Toliara is the site of the national basketball championship for a week, and we showed the exhibition outside of the gym. As the people came to watch the games, not to be educated about nature conservation, and as they were not allowed to leave the gym during the breaks without paying again upon re-entry, we had a rather limited audience.

However, the championship is being organized by the court of Toliara. Cooperating with them (and sponsoring the sound system for the championship) is also in the hope that, next time we deliver a case of someone who has burned the forest to the police, the court will make an effort to make sure the person gets punished – which, so far, has rarely ever happened, even though it means simply applying the law, which makes "hatsake" illegal anywhere in Madagascar. But in a country where the entire government is "interim" and non-elected, and corruption is the shaping force of all politics, little favours count more than papers and law books.

Some people really help making a better world...

... So that we can breath a fresher air, coming from the plants that surround us. So that we can swim in the waters we love, along with the fish. Fishes that we can then catch on our waterproof cameras while we do scuba diving. Scuba diving followed by a nice, long cocktail on the beaches with white, glittery sand. Sand that comes from the rocks that used to there once. Rocks from the mountains, mountains from the Earth. All in one, we have 29.22% of the Earth's surface covered by land, the rest of almost 70% is water, from which 97% is salt water and less than 1% is drinkable. And on 100% of our beautiful planet we have different forms of LIFE.

Lucky for us, since 1961 we also have more caring people organized under the foundation called WWF, spread over 100 international offices, and their over 5 million supporters around the world, to make our lives better, in ways that sometimes we don't even realize. Nowadays, we don't think and most of the times we don't know/care how the products of our daily use were made. Nevertheless, from the chairs we sit on to the sun screening lotions we apply on our skins, everything has an impact on the world as we know it. Or, should I say, as we should know it.

And when we imagine this world surrounding us, either we live in huge metropolitan areas or in small villages, we have to see the nature. We simply have to see all the green spots that represent the vegetation and all the moving colors that represent the wildlife. They are part of our lives even if most of the times we don't share the same territories, as individuals. Because as groups of people, as humankind, we actually do share the same planet. And it is such a pity to keep living in our square boxes like disconnected-from-reality robots, when there are plenty of actions we can take to make this world better.

If you don't know where to start, let me ease your trouble: others have already started, for decades even, and recently WWF became my love brand in matters of nature conservation. I find it indefinable to express my consideration for all the projects they have been involved in and successfully managed to complete. And by complete I mean having a goal, putting all resources to work and then having that objective checked from their list of "thing to do for a healthy, happy, thriving, living and ultimately diverse and wonderful world". So you need not to worry, there are tens of ways you can help, starting right here, starting right now. Don't leave the water running when brushing your teeth, don't leave your computer or other lights on when going to bed, don't buy animal parts or souvenirs coming from endangered species, don't print written materials if not mandatory.

And if this seems like a list of don'ts, let me offer you another one, in a more positive approach: invest in renewable energy, be smart when shopping to avoid wasting food resources, travel wisely to avoid polluting the air, donate for natural causes you believe in, be part of local NGOs that care for your well being, sign on line petitions to exercise your democratic rights, plant a tree or vegetables you will later eat, stay in touch with nature and treat animals and plants like your best friends.

Then I recommend you do a half an hour Google search on ongoing projects to save the nature. And take 1 minute to think about all the TV shows you have seen on Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Animal Planet etc. that were talking about the researches that were made on wildlife, about the scientific discoveries, about the new species of life we keep finding. There were some astonishing images I still have in my mind from watching the Wild Russia series.

As I am sure you have yours. And we all come with our biological photography album made of memories we got from living in this world. Every step matters, when step by step we create the path. The road, the highway, the bridge. We are all connected and have to use our imagination to understand that our actions here and now, all summarized, have an impact on the world, there and later.

I have always been that it's called a believer and I am happy to declare myself a dreamer. I took all the good actions mentioned above and I am now part of the wonderful project WWF has for its special volunteers. I don't know if there is a causative connection between these two, but what I can say for sure is that thinking big and being passionate about something will really change your life. Best part even, not only yours.

If I am standing here today, writing part of my story, it is because I sincerely believe in the humans' power. In our ability to become amazing creators. In our destiny to generate fresh and innovative ideas that continuously redesign our world. It is part of our DNA to do the best we can in exchange for what we have freely been given. And with technology at our feet, we can look back at our actions in less than half a year and proudly say "I really helped making this world a better one".

About Kilalaky

We would be going to numerous villages, some where the people feared us, the children ran from us and the villagers we greeted in Malagasy would not reply, at other times we would go to villages just around the corner where the village en masse would approach us to shake hands with us individually, where our buckets were taken from our hands and filled for us at the river and leave with gifts of chickens in wicker baskets. Every village was completely different. Sometimes it was hard and strange.

However there was a common thread amongst all the villages and the levelling ground for everyone, white people included. This thing wasn't food. That was a very depressing aspect of the cultural exchange, no this thing was called Kilalaky. Now this is a type of music totally unique to the Bara people of Madagascar. Everyone listens to it all day long and dances it to it all night long from their transistor radio type devices. The music is tied in so strongly to their sense of identity that to say someone is a bad Kilalaky dancer is like saying someone is a bad Bara man.

The first village called Ihorononda had a massive party on our arrival with Kilalaky dancing. Everyone would dance around in circles, kicking up dust and mimicing the moves of the front person, whipping their hair back and forth. I joined the end of a line and started to pick it up. In Ivohibe every party was either a Kilalaky concert or a national holiday with Kilalaky themed music set. The group were all at a party for the gendarmerie and I stayed a bit longer and joined the Kilalaky throng and was educated in all the correct Kilalaky do's and don'ts, and since that day onwards it was town knowledge that I was a lover of Kilalaky. Not a word spoken on my part. People would point their fingers at me and shout out something I didn't understand and the word Kilalaky. I couldn't reply. I liked Kilalaky. Which was mostly true anyhow. But the people decided for me that this music was my music as well. So over the next two months I lived in a haze of Kilalaky beats.

We had a world environment day in a village in the south, and there my love for Kilalaky was known by many people and I was taken to a Kilalaky concert in the pitch black, with only the stars above and the sounds of the acoustic Kilalaky, the thundering of dancers' feet and the laughs. Then I had a kid with a transistor radio follow me around all night playing the three Kilalaky songs he had. And he kept popping up in different areas of the region and shout the work Kilalaky at me and laugh a lot. He also showed me where to buy good coffee and schneff berries in this town called Maropaika.

The reason I think that this obscure music/dance/cultural icon is important to include here is that for me, it was how I removed the barriers between my inherent weirdness and the villagers belonging to the land. For the Bara, Kilalaky was the centre of social life, friendships were made and lost, old rivalries entrenched, new romances formed, even dare I say outsiders let in and accepted a bit more. I feel it's important when living in a village with people you can't share much in terms of language with to find other ways of showing friendship and creating common ground. Kilalaky highlight our similarities, not the differences. Music is a powerful force.

My experience in Ivohibe, Madagascar

The small contribution I wish I can give to this blog is not to describe in details the activities me and the other volunteers carried out (some of them did it very well and precisely in their respective articles), but rather to try to think with more distance and possibly a more critical-view, about what I experienced and learnt during my 3-months field-work in the District of Ivohibe.

If I step back and I have a look at my idea of conservation before arriving in Madagascar, I probably didn't realize how complicated conservation can be, and how many factors are interlinked within a simple conservation project. Even if ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss are initially scientific issues, they involve many other spheres (economic, political, social, legal, ethical, etc.), all of which become exceedingly important to warrantee the success of your project. In the past, to face the increasing concern of biodiversity decline, the main strategy was "simply" to establish Protected Areas, which undoubtedly brought significant benefits to wildlife, but often excluded local communities, as well as their daily-life activities, from them. Whereas now, WWF's attempt, as well as many other organizations' around the globe, is to try to conciliate conservation with economic development and, above all, to help local communities to become responsible and warrants of their natural resources. I think that this approach is "ethically" more legitimate, but also practically more useful, as it assumes the fact that in areas where economic and social concerns are still very high (like in many parts of Madagascar), the only way to ensure environmental protection is by allowing people to use their natural resources in a sustainable way. Local people still rely on the forest for many of their livelihoods (wood, water, medicinal plants, food, etc.), if we put "fences" around the forest, conservation would become an enemy and nothing would probably be solved. At the same time, using the forest as the sole source of revenue increases the pressure that people have on it and would probably lead to further deforestation and forest degradation. For this reason, WWF promotes new activities, such as vegetable plots or small-size breeding, so that villagers can have some economic alternatives within the village, sell their products, rise their revenues and, therefore, decrease their dependence on the forest.

However, as I said, conservation is not an easy thing and, unfortunately, there is no "silver-bullet"! Even this approach can have its issues, as it assumes the fact that once the NGO will leave the site, local people will keep carrying on the activities, and will manage the forest as they have been asked. I'm not saying that this won't happen (I do hope it will, of course), but as far as I have seen during my volunteering experience and learnt during my studies, there is unfortunately often a gap between what "we" western conservationist think and hope and what local people actually perceive. We see Madagascar as one of the most diverse place in the world, with one of the highest rate of endemism and with astonishing landscapes. We scientifically know that the evolutionary processes that happened in this island are unique and unrepeatable. We also know that if this heritage will disappear, it will be gone forever. On the other side, local communities might have a different vision, which reflects what THEY consider important and how THEY see nature. Lemurs are the symbol of their country, not an endemic group of primates that exists only in Madagascar. Baobab are sacred trees, not "Adansonia gender within the Bombacaceae family, of which 6 out of the 8 overall species grow only in Madagascar". The forest is a source of wood and food, not an aesthetical attraction for a touristic summer trip. I am not saying that one vision is better than the other. I am not saying neither that these visions are incompatible, or even static (many villagers in Ivohibe described the environment in a way that was very similar to the one we had). Though, I just think that this potential difference is exceedingly important and challenging, and, according to me, it should be taken into account if we want our conservation projects to be successful.

We had the impression (and not only the impression, as we realized some surveys in the villages that seemed to confirm it) that people in the villages where WWF is working are usually very satisfied about the ongoing project and grateful to WWF for the technical and financial support. They also seem to be aware of the importance of protecting the forest, which means that the significant bulk of debates, workshops and discussions that have been undertaken in the last year seem to have been very useful. However, I am personally afraid that, due to other external factors (such as high rate of illiteracy, poverty or maybe just cultural behaviours), this enthusiasm may significantly decrease as soon as WWF will leave the site. It might not be too hard to be happy when WWF's agents (and sometimes even white young volunteers) come to your village and tell you what you should do and how. I think it isn't that straightforward to do the same once you are on your own, and once you don't have any external motivational support. In fact, some people often told us that they really don't want WWF to leave them, because they are like "the pup who needs his mum!". As WWF's goal is to support the communities until they become autonomous, my question (which unfortunately doesn't have an answer!) is : as WWF is planning to leave Ivohibe very soon, are people ready to follow up on their own?

Whatever the answer, I think what has been done so far by WWF is remarkable, and I'm glad to have given even a tiny contribution. As for me, this project was a great and probably unrepeatable experience, both from a human/personal perspective, and to help me to understand how a project like that works and what are the difficulties that can come up within conservation. For sure, these 3 months in Madagascar gave me a back-pack of information that I will keep for the rest of my life.

Women's Strength

One of the things that makes me feel strangely comfortable while walking around the town in which we are stationed is how women welcome us. The usually smile at us, saying the usual hello formulas "Akoryabe or Soloma".

I feel a bit of curiosity on how their daily life goes about and am very impressed on how many of them I see tending the little shops around town. They are practically all women in the market where we buy our products and food. Also our "Explore!" Team has been working with the villagers on their fields to help with better land use, and plans to increase productivity in a sustainable way. Half of the people that work with us in the field are women. They look strong and invincible to me, but also weary and with so much work on their shoulders.

I have seen Malagasy women work in the fields with their kids strapped up to their waist, sleeping or just looking to the world, while they bend to the floor to plant grains and water the plantations.

I have seen them with their kids attached to their breasts, feeding as any other kid, while these women kept at work, under the sun, to try and get their land to produce what they need to live.

Of course it is not only grown women who show an immense amount of strength. I have seen, not more than two days ago, a little girl, about twelve years old, looking after her two small brothers, or maybe someone else's brothers, while the whole village was having an inaugurating party. The little girl had poured some juice into a small glass, a luxury only reserved to special occasions, and she was giving the juice to the little men she was in charge of. She made sure to give each of the little guys a couple of sips of juice twice before allowing herself to have some. Amazed by this I looked at the scene with more attention. And to my greatest amazement I saw how she repeated this several times. Each time she poured some juice she made sure to first give a couple of sips to the two little kids and only then would she have one, short sip.

We left the celebration soon after this. I couldn't get out of my mind the image of this little girl and her sense of responsibility. Like a mother she was taking care of two little boys. She only allowed herself to have a treat after they were both satisfied.

I could only think of the unfairness of this world that doesn't properly celebrate such strength and Love. My deepest respect went for Malagasy women that work in the fields with their kids on their back, and who teach their little girls to care for their younger relatives in such a responsible and adult way.

Skinned Alive

Most of my previous volunteer placements had concentrated on individual species conservation. I always felt really interested by it and my love and passion for animals had naturally driven me to those experiences and projects. My empathy and commitment to others, which I think is one of my main characteristics, not always for the best, had pushed me on to the projects and programs that demanded me to take care of a specific animal. I worked with monkeys for a short time but preferred much more those projects that work with predators such as big cats or wolves. I was never that interested in the programs that work specifically on forest conservation, although I always deeply acknowledged the importance of ecosystem conservation, and those who work to protect them.

So when I got the email from WWF saying I could participate in a Program in Madagascar, that was not directly involved in species conservation but more on ecosystem preservation I was very interested in getting involved. But to be honest, not nearly as passionate as if someone had proposed me to take care of a tiger. I was keen when my program started to learn a lot and educate myself in general conservation. But my heart always dreamed of big animals to care for.

However I think that shifted a bit as soon as we traversed our first part of the program. With my fellow explorers we were on our second day of journey towards the South of the Island of "Madagasikara", when we emerged out of a line of hills into grasslands landscape. And the sight was heartbreaking. The forest stopped abruptly, right next to the highway and then the earth was flesh red, with bits taken out of it were someone had made a huge fire. Across the hills we could see the reddish flesh color of the land that had been burned. And it truly looked like it had been skinned alive.

For the first time my compassion and empathy were aroused by something other than the pain of an animal. My heart felt for the entire land, since I could feel its suffering at the pain of having being burnt, the same suffering that I might feel if someone would burn my skin. My empathy for charismatic individual species dramatically spread to include the entire ecosystems that allow them to survive. The redness of the burned land truly felt anguishing. I don t really know how it came to have such a big impact on me, maybe it was the skin like appearance of the grass burned. Or maybe it was the dark black carbon color of the land after the fire ate it alive. Or maybe it was the contrast of the rich and dense forest right next to the desolated and now infertile burned land. But suddenly I was much more excited to be participating in a forests preservation project and my heart started feeling for it as it would have for a big tiger. After all, it´s all part of the same circle. My understanding of the importance of ecosystem conservation was already growing with each the Explore! Program experiences.

Changing one's self

One of our first s encounters with Malagasy culture was our language course. We had a crash course of Bara, which is the dialect spoken in the south, were our Field Project is. For me especially this was a very interesting experience. Malagasy is a language derivated from the immigration from South East Asia, and is therefore related, however distantly, to Sanskrit and all the indo European and indo Aryan languages that descent from it. There are different theories about language shaping the cultures and of cultures shaping the languages accordingly to their vision of the world, and the Self. Of course as in any field, especially for social sciences, there is a lot of disagreement and different theories. However, I have found in my studies that there are some correlations between the language formation and some cultural conceptions.

For instance most of western languages are centered in the Subject as being the first and most important item of a sentence and an idea. The whole structure of the language is centered around the subject. I found, to my amazement, that, as in many Asiatic languages, this is not the case neither for Malagasy nor for Bara. The whole sentences are based and take as starting point the verb and or the noun, and the subject only arrives at the end, except on counted exceptions. I ve always found this very interesting and indeed personal shaping. Is it possible that we think differently accordingly as to what we think is more important? Even in a sentence? Does it has anything to do at all as to how a society is shaped and evolves, the place they give to the subject, the "Self", the "Me"?

I think that probably it does have some importance. It was very interesting for me to learn a new language were subject comes at the end. It forces you to think in a different way, put yourself aside, you and all your prejudices and pre conceptions. This is actually a very good exercise, in general, but specially for people working in an international or foreign cultures environment. The challenge to forget about you, or anyone really, and focus on the action in order to build an idea is refreshing and a very useful state of mind while working with unknown people, in an unknown atmosphere and with new, and also unknown, work ahead.

I have also been told once, don't remember by whom, that it is said that when you learn to think in a new language, your mind changes a bit, and something shifts in yourself. While I am definitely not there yet with Bara dialect, I did notice a shift at some point during our learning course. I started the week writing all in capitals, to make sure to remember each word as written and pronounce it correctly. I just had the need to do so. After four full days of language course, eight hours a week and full immersion, I automatically shifted to my normal writing. There was no more need to write in capitals to remember the new formations of the words and sounds, with my normal writing was enough. The words even if new, sounded familiar and comfortable to write.

I think this was definitely a first step towards a different phase. Bara was not the unknown anymore, just the unlearned. And "I" was not at the front anymore, but at the back, all the way behind the Others. Self, was already shifting places: Changing were ourselves.

El sur también existe: The South also exists

In Malagasy culture Taboos are very common and very important. There are many things which they do not talk about and we are forbidden to ask or to photograph. Graves for instance are very sacred and we are to respect them. This is a very understandable taboo given that ancestral respect that is paid more or less worldwide to Death. However there are many other taboos very well known in Malagasy culture, such as not crossing a river with a red shirt on, or not marrying someone of your own family. Malagasy tribes are very sensitive about their taboos and of course very secretive.

I found out that there are many taboos in western culture as well. Richness, DEVELOPMENT, and history are deeply enrooted taboos. For instance, it is still difficult to address the uncomfortable reality that a third of the world grew rich and prosper exploiting the two remaining thirds of the planet. Colonization, exploitation, slavery, economic exploitation, appropriation of natural resources by foreign entities... all kind of taboos for westerns cultures. Now however; richer cultures are concerned about worlds poverty and are active in it´s alleviation. Conversation grows uncomfortable when discussing how many richer countries arrived to their current state of livelihood.

"El Sur también existe" is a phrase from Pablo Neruda, a very well-known Chilean Poet. It means "the South also exists". It usually accompanies a Torres Garcia painting that draws attention to the Latin American Continent as it is depicted upside down. I wouldn't dare to speak on the artists behalf but I do think that the statement refers, at least to some extent, to the fact that the North prospered to the detriment of the "rest of the world". The Souths riches were harvested for other nations to profit. Neruda´s and Garcia´s artwork forcibly and purposefully encourages the discussion of such taboos regarding the exploitation of the South.

It is a general and misguided idea that because the North was deeply responsible for much of the South´s current poor state, they are the only ones that have to come up with the solutions. One of the things that I like most about WWF, is that they break this preconception by working alongside, training and employing local workforces. One of the most interesting philosophies that WWF applies is related to their commitment to collaborate and involve the regional, environmental and governmental agencies, building together the projects that aim to preserve the biodiversity and natural resources of our World.

Projects in the South have to be thought and prepared by the South itself. A South-South collaboration is key. A lot can be learned on social and environment conservation and management in Africa. There is a rising potential that could allow in the future a translocation of the successful stories to the other countries that may not yet have found sustainable solutions for their development and environmental issues and challenges. This will allow us, somewhere in our future to be able to grow capable of relying on our own capacity and willingness to evolve. WWF instigates this evolution.

The first challenge is the acknowledgement from all parties involved of a simple fact: we are all equally part of the solution. I specifically respect WWF for being open minded enough as to allow and facilitate me, an Argentinian student, the opportunity to go through this program in Africa, and have the opportunity to work arm in arm with my fellow youth international volunteer team mates to build sustainable conservation strategies. For an NGO any budget decision is quite delicate, every penny counts. WWFs investment in us, or me, says a lot about their commitment to train a new generation with all the possible skills to instigate the making of a free independent, healthy, developed South of the World.

The North does not have all the answers; but it does have the capacity and responsibility to provide to the South the necessary jump start towards emancipation. From personal experience I can say that throwing money at a country does not simply work. You need guidance from international organizations who can pass their training and experience so that future generations in the South maybe independent and able to grow without North´s aid.

Projects that work the best are therefore those that bring in together international teams and national populations to create fresh local solutions to each challenge addressed.

Travailler au WWF

Voici un résumé de ce que j'ai appris sur le travail du WWF après 6 mois passés sur le terrain à Madagascar, d'abord au sein d'un groupe de 6 volontaires à Ivohibe, puis au niveau de la gestion des projets de la région à Fianarantsoa.

Le principe d'action :

Le WWF travaille en collaboration avec des partenaires gouvernementaux et avec des associations locales, appelées Communautés de Base (COBA). Les partenaires officiels sont le Ministère de l'Environnement et des Forêts et les Madagascar National Parks (MNP). Le principe est le suivant : il existe des aires protégées, gérées par le ministère et le MNP, et des aires non protégées mais qui présentent quand même un intérêt écologique crucial puisqu'elles assurent la continuité du corridor forestier entre les aires protégées. Ce corridor appelé Ala Atsinanana s'étend du nord au sud de l'île.

Ces zones non protégées sont malgré tout contrôlées, et elles sont elles-mêmes divisées en trois : le noyau dur représente le cœur de la forêt où il n'est pas autorisé de prélever du bois, alors que la zone de droit d'usage en périphérie est une zone gérée par les associations de villageois qui peuvent alors profiter de cette ressource en échange de leur engagement à la gérer durablement. La troisième zone est celle de restauration, où les communautés replantent des arbres soit pour restaurer purement et simplement la forêt, soit pour pouvoir les utiliser en remplacement des coupes dans la zone de droit d'usage.

C'est ce qu'on appelle le Transfert de Gestion des Ressources Naturelles, et c'est là que le WWF intervient. Il travaille à Ivohibe sur deux projets : le Programme Holistique de Conservation des Forêts et le Renforcement de Capacité des Sociétés Civiles. Ce sont des noms un peu barbares, mais en gros le premier vise à protéger les forêts et le deuxième à donner les moyens aux communautés locales pour gérer eux-mêmes la portion de forêt dont elles deviennent responsables par le Transfert de Gestion.

Dans les deux cas, les actions sont plus du domaine du développement que de la conservation. Le WWF accompagne les villageois dans la création de l'association, dans l'organisation de celle-ci et promeut des activités qui ont pour but de réduire la pression des villageois sur la forêt : cultures sur brûlis, déforestation pour avoir plus de surfaces cultivables ou de pâturages, coupe pour le bois de construction et de chauffe... Jusqu'à maintenant, 11 Communautés de Base ont été créées dans le district d'Ivohibe.

Les activités génératrices de revenus alternatifs :

On peut distinguer trois catégories, selon la durée nécessaire à l'obtention de résultats. Dans tous les cas, le WWF fournit formations, équipement et matières premières aux communautés pour qu'elles puissent développer ces activités.

Les activités à court terme (quelques mois) sont le développement du système de riziculture intensif ou amélioré (SRI / SRA) et des cultures maraîchères. SRI / SRA permet d'obtenir de meilleurs rendements en riziculture avec la même surface cultivée et la même charge globale de travail, en repiquant les jeunes plants à un moment précis et de manière organisée. Cela permet un meilleur développement des plants de riz.

La culture maraîchère (CUMA) a deux buts : la vente de légumes sur les marchés environnants et la promotion de la consommation de légumes pour une alimentation plus variée. Elle concerne des légumes feuilles (salades, oignons, choux, carottes...) et des légumes secs (haricots, arachides...).

Les activités à moyen terme sont des activités d'élevage. Quatre types sont proposés aux communautés : canards, lapins, poissons et abeilles. Le but est de pouvoir vendre des produits (animaux vivants, viande, œufs, miel) tout en assurant le développement de l'élevage par la reproduction.

Enfin, des activités à long terme sont démarrées. Elles consistent en des plantations d'arbres fruitiers (principalement des litchis, dommage pour moi la saison commencera quand je partirai...) ou d'arbres permettant la production d'huile essentielle (le camphre notamment). Ces plantations promettent d'être très rentables mais nécessitent plusieurs années avant de délivrer des produits et donc des bénéfices.

Les bénéfices justement peuvent être variés : gain direct d'argent par la vente pour les membres, économie d'argent sur d'autres produits (le sucre remplacé par le miel par exemple), une meilleure alimentation, des investissements communs avec l'argent obtenu (stock de riz pour la période de soudure entre les deux récoltes annuelles)...

En ce qui concerne la protection de la forêt et des espèces qui y vivent, toutes ces activités permettent aux villageois de limiter leurs pratiques gourmandes en surface (toujours plus de rizières et de pâturages pour les zébus). On peut aussi les considérer comme une compensation de la part du WWF (ou une incitation) pour leur nouvelles responsabilités envers une partie de la forêt (contrôle des accès, restriction des coupes).

Les activités de restauration de la forêt :

En plus de toutes ces activités, le WWF supporte les actions de restauration directe de la forêt. Grâce à plusieurs pépinières localisées dans différentes communautés, des essences d'arbres locales sont développées afin d'être replantées et ainsi augmenter la surface boisée.

D'autres essences non autochtones sont également plantées, telles que l'Eucalyptus et l'Acacia. Le but n'est plus de restaurer la forêt, mais de mieux la protéger en fournissant une source de bois renouvelable et gérée durablement aux villageois. Parce que quelles que soient les activités génératrices de revenus développées ici, ils ont toujours besoin de bois pour construire leurs maisons (ou les reconstruire après les cyclones, j'ai vu plusieurs maisons détruites dans chaque village) et pour cuisiner.

Les activités de sensibilisation et de renforcement de la société civile:

Comme les activités génératrices de revenus alternatifs, ce ne sont pas des actions de conservation directe. Elles sont pourtant essentielles car elles permettent aux villageois de mieux comprendre pourquoi tout ce travail est entrepris et d'assurer le développement de leurs communautés eux-mêmes sur le long terme. Le WWF ne se limite pas à aider les communautés à se structurer en associations (rédaction des statuts, élaboration de plans d'actions, ...) et de les accompagner dans le Transfert de Gestion.

L'équipe du projet de Renforcement des Capacités de la Société Civile a mis en place un système d'alphabétisation pour adultes dans quelques villages au sud d'Ivohibe. Quelques « alphabétiseurs » ont été recrutés pour enseigner à lire et écrire à plusieurs dizaines de participants, qui à leur tour pourront aussi transmettre leurs nouvelles connaissances. Surtout, ces villageois pourront mieux s'impliquer dans la vie associative et même devenir membre du bureau (président, secrétaire, trésorier).

En plus des sessions de sensibilisation, notamment sur le changement climatique et le rôle de la forêt, les équipes du WWF promeuvent la construction et l'utilisation de foyers améliorés. Tous les ménages dans les villages isolés cuisinent au feu de bois, ce qui bien sûr en consomme beaucoup et produit énormément de fumée (je ne vois pas comment ils arrivent à s'habituer à ça, je ne pouvais pas rester dans leurs petites pièces sans aération avec parfois deux ou trois foyers plus de quelques minutes...). Par exemple, des villageois d'Ihorononda ont été invités dans d'autres villages pour montrer leur technique de fabrication. L'intérêt est de réduire la consommation de bois (et donc la pression sur la forêt directement) et la production de fumée.

Cet échange à propos du foyer amélioré n'est qu'un exemple parmi de nombreux autres. Le WWF organise régulièrement des visites entre les COBAs du district et même dans d'autres régions. Le but est toujours le même : faire en sorte que les villageois puissent partager leurs expériences, dans l'optique de les autonomiser le plus possible et de leur donner l'habitude de faire ces échanges. C'est pour moi un des aspects les plus importants de l'action du WWF, qui prépare ainsi sa stratégie de sortie en donnant les meilleures conditions possibles aux communautés pour poursuivre leurs activités.

J'espère aussi que les réunions avec les autorités (Environnement et Forêts, MNP, district, mairie, police, gendarmerie) continueront, car elles permettent à tous les acteurs de mieux comprendre qui est responsable de quoi et quels sont les enjeux actuels.

Enfin, sur le modèle d'autres projets dans d'autres régions, une coopérative a été créée, regroupant des membres de trois COBAs proches d'Ivohibe. Elle n'est pas encore tout à fait fonctionnelle, mais à terme elle permettra à ces COBAs d'accéder à de nouveaux marchés et par exemple de réaliser des investissements communs. Je vois un peu ça comme la dernière pièce du puzzle pour que le système fonctionne indépendamment.

Nos activités en tant que volontaires :

Notre participation au programme Explore! du WWF a en gros trois buts : que nous volontaires nous rendions compte de ce qui est engagé sur le terrain et apprendre de tout ça ; qu'on apporte un regard extérieur et de nouvelles idées aux projets ; et enfin qu'on partage toutes ces expériences à notre retour, en produisant des films et en organisant des présentations. Ou en racontant ce qu'on vit et ce qu'on fait sur internet.

Tout d'abord, on a fait quelques animations complémentaires des activités gérées par le WWF. Quand on faisait Culture Maraîchère, on en profitait pour introduire le compost. Là encore, il présente des avantages multiples comme bien sûr fournir un excellent complément pour la terre où ils font pousser leurs légumes ou encore nettoyer les villages de tous les déchets organiques qu'ils produisent et qu'ils laissent généralement pourrir ici ou là.

Toujours liée à la CUMA, on leur montrait comment cuisiner les légumes qu'ils font pousser (ça paraît bête, mais dans certains villages c'était vraiment la première fois qu'ils cuisinaient autre chose que du riz, de la viande, des haricots ou certains légumes feuilles). On a essayé deux recettes : une soupe avec pommes de terres, carottes, choux, oignons, haricots qui n'a pas eu un franc succès et qu'on a vite abandonnée et un risotto avec généralement tomates, courgettes, oignons qui lui était bien apprécié (parce qu'il y a du riz !). Mis à part montrer comment couper et cuire les légumes, c'était surtout l'occasion de parler de nutrition et de l'importance de varier les aliments. On a créé et distribué un poster qui montre une pyramide de l'alimentation basée sur ce qu'ils connaissent (riz, manioc, fruits et légumes, viande, canne à sucre, miel).

Pour accompagner la formation sur le foyer amélioré et montrer ses avantages (et surtout amuser la galerie), on a fait un petit sketch qui montre un couple qui cuisine avec un foyer traditionnel, qui tousse beaucoup et qui a toujours besoin de plus de bois et un autre qui utilise le foyer amélioré et pour qui tout va bien. Très basique donc, mais en malgache alors il ne fallait pas s'attendre à des merveilles, et ça les faisait bien marrer.

On a quand même fait des choses un peu plus sérieuses, comme une sensibilisation à la protection de l'environnement avec les enfants. Des enfants bien désœuvrés d'ailleurs, en partie à cause de la grève des enseignants quand nous étions dans les villages (elle est terminée maintenant, le bac et le BEPC ont pu avoir lieu et la rentrée devrait se passer sans problèmes). Je pense qu'ils étaient contents de venir faire cette petite leçon avec les Vazahas, surtout qu'on faisait un ou deux petits jeux avec eux à la fin et qu'on leur distribuait des cadeaux. On a eu du mal à définir la meilleure manière d'aborder ce sujet avec eux. Souvent on avait l'impression que ça leur passait à 2000 km au-dessus de la tête...

Finalement, on s'est mis d'accord sur cette approche. D'abord on parle de nos pays respectifs en décrivant un peu l'environnement (reliefs, climats, ...). Ensuite, c'était à eux de décrire leur propre environnement avec des dessins ; certains d'entre eux venaient le montrer devant toute la classe en expliquant si possible les interactions entre les choses qu'ils ont dessiné. Finalement, on montrait un poster qui résume très simplement les besoins de l'Homme (eau, nourriture, air, abri) et les cycles naturels liés à chacun de ces besoins. On montrait alors l'importance du soleil, de l'eau et des arbres dont on a fondamentalement besoin pour accéder à ces ressources vitales.

Nous avons aussi engagé des discussions avec les adultes, principalement ceux engagés dans les communautés. Les trois filles de l'équipe rencontraient les villageoises pour leur permettre de parler de choses dont elles ne parlent pas forcément en présence d'hommes. Pendant ce temps nous les garçons discutions avec les hommes. J'en ai déjà pas mal parlé dans mon carnet. Parfois, ça tournait vraiment à la leçon magistrale des petits occidentaux qui expliquent pourquoi ils sont là et pourquoi c'est important de protéger la forêt, mais d'autres fois c'était vraiment un échange et c'est grâce à ces discussions que j'ai personnellement appris le plus sur leur vision des choses.

Deux autres activités que nous avons créées nous donnaient aussi l'occasion de discuter directement avec les villageois de leur relation avec l'environnement et des actions du WWF. Le sondage tout d'abord, visait à récolter des informations dans tous les villages sur le niveau de sensibilisation de la population. Ces informations pourront servir au WWF pour mieux cibler leurs actions, mais c'était surtout un outil d'interaction avec les villageois et l'occasion d'initier une réflexion environnementale avec eux.

L'analyse économique est venue d'un désir de l'équipe de mieux cerner la situation financière des activités démarrées. Nous n'avons pas pu faire cette analyse sur beaucoup de groupements car peu d'entre eux sont assez matures pour obtenir des informations utilisables, mais elle a permis de mettre en valeur certaines déficiences au niveau des projets et de mieux nous rendre compte de l'impact de ces activités. Et encore de montrer aux membres des communautés (et aux agents du WWF...) qu'il est essentiel de faire ce suivi des résultats.

Enfin, le WWF nous a fourni un générateur et des ordinateurs pour qu'on puisse faire des projections de films dans les villages que nous avons visités. Notamment « Fon'Ivohibe – Le cœur d'Ivohibe », un film d'une demi-heure produit par le WWF qui explique les problèmes environnementaux dans la région et que je connais par cœur... C'est un très bon film, mais on s'en lasse à force J Ce support nous permettait aussi de poser des questions aux villageois pour voir ce qu'ils en avaient retenu et interagir un peu plus avec eux. On a aussi montré des films que les volontaires de 2010 ont réalisés et quelques photos que nous avions pris sur le terrain. Succès garanti ! C'était toujours de très bons moments, les villageois étaient toujours enchantés d'avoir un peu de divertissement.

Il existe des clubs de jeunes, appelés Clubs Vintsy, qui sont des antennes du WWF. Nous avons fait quelques actions avec eux, notamment une collecte de déchets (plutôt symbolique, il faudrait quelques mois pour tout nettoyer à Ivohibe et surtout savoir quoi faire de toutes ces ordures...). Roxy et Hannah ont également eu un rôle dans un petit sketch que le club a présenté pour la Journée Mondiale de l'Environnement.

Parallèlement à notre participation aux actions du WWF, nous avons aussi rencontré quelques fois des élèves du cours d'anglais d'Omega, enseignant au lycée. On a discuté de choses et d'autres, sans but précis, simplement pour leur permettre d'entendre d'autres accents et de parler un peu anglais aussi.

Comme je disais plus haut, le WWF nous demande de parler de notre expérience une fois notre volontariat terminé. Jusque-là nous avons créé trois films : les filles se sont intéressées à la situation des femmes dans la culture Bara et les principaux défis auxquels elles sont confrontées (en anglais) ; avec Jordon et Adrien, nous avons fait un film reprenant grosso modo les premières parties de cet article (en français) ; Jordon a également mis en images une chanson d'un groupe local, Big Rap Ivohibe (en malgache...). Enfin Hannah a fait un film à propos d'un villageois qu'elle a suivi quand elle était à Manarivo II et moi une vidéo qui montre les activités que nous volontaires avons fait (donc qui reprend ce chapitre). Des films sur Madagascar, sa biodiversité, ses habitants et compagnie, il y en a toute une flopée sur internet produits par les précédents volontaires. Pour ce qui est des présentations, je n'ai pas encore organisé grand-chose, mais j'en ferai probablement une pour l'Association des Amis du Zoo de Lyon qui supporte ce genre d'actions et dont la présidente est très liée à Madagascar, une autre à la fondation GoodPlanet (partenaire du WWF pour le Programme Holistique de Conservation des Forêts) et peut-être une autre au siège de WWF International à Gland en Suisse.

Mes activités au niveau de la gestion du projet :

Depuis que je suis au bureau à Fianarantsoa, je travaille sur la création d'une base de données regroupant toutes les informations nécessaires pour visualiser le statut des projets en cours à Ivohibe. C'est un outil qui il me semble est vraiment utile pour organiser le suivi des actions et des résultats obtenus. Jusque-là, ce suivi est plus ou moins géré par les agents de terrain, plus ou moins documenté dans des rapports, contenant des données plus ou moins correctes selon ce que les membres des COBAs leur disent et qui écrit le rapport. Bref, pas facile de savoir qui fait quoi, où, comment et avec quels résultats.

Et avec la fin de la phase 1 du projet qui arrive à grands pas (décembre 2012), l'heure des bilans et des évaluations arrive aussi et j'espère donc que cette collecte d'informations sur toutes les activités en cours leur permettra d'y voir plus clair, avec des données vérifiées et à jour. Je ne pensais pas qu'il serait si compliqué d'obtenir des informations dignes de confiance venant du terrain... Apparemment, tout le monde est d'accord qu'il y a actuellement onze COBAs à Ivohibe. C'est déjà pas mal. Par contre, pour connaître le nombre de groupements (comme CUMA, pisciculture, arbres fruitiers...) c'est une autre histoire puisque chaque agent a sa version. Pareil pour les problèmes ou les succès.

Voilà, c'est ce qui m'a bien occupé pendant les trois mois de ma prolongation de volontariat : collecter ces informations, faire le ménage là-dedans et organiser tout ça pour qu'on puisse y voir quelque chose. En espérant qu'ils continueront à mettre cette base de données à jour une fois que je serai parti.

En plus de ça, j'ai créé des versions électroniques des posters qu'on a faits sur le terrain (compost, école, nutrition), pour que chaque COBA ait une version propre.

Mais là où je pense avoir le plus d'impact, c'est en donnant mon avis sur la manière dont les choses se passent ici. Mon statut de volontaire me laisse une certaine liberté de parole, et ma présence ici depuis quatre mois me permet d'avoir une opinion assez juste de ce qui est fait et comment. J'ai récemment eu une période assez critique, quand je suis retourné à Ivohibe pour essayer de collecter plus d'informations pour la base de données. C'est en creusant un peu qu'on se rend compte qu'il n'y a pas vraiment de suivi des résultats ou des problèmes en cours. Du coup tout traîne un peu... En creusant encore un peu plus, j'ai vu qu'en fait il y a bien un suivi, mais pas vraiment systématisé et quand même assez limité. Et les tensions entre agents ne rendent pas la tâche facile. Alors je donne mon avis, si on m'écoute tant mieux, sinon que puis-je faire de plus ? Si ça permet à quelques agents de prendre un peu de recul par rapport à ce qu'ils font et non plus simplement commencer plein de choses sans n'en vraiment finaliser aucune, ça sera je pense toujours ça de gagné.

Et c'est avec ce genre de discussions que de nouvelles idées apparaissent, qui peut-être seront utilisées pour la phase 2 qui devrait commencer en 2013...

Il faut garder la morale et cela vaut bien plus que la peine

Je suis parti sur terrain avec un group de six volontaires dont deux sont retourné dans leur pays seulement deux semaines plus tard. Je ne pense pas que le projet était inadapté ou insupportable. Pour moi la mission restent une magnifique expérience dans la nature et en échange avec les gens qui y habite. Mais parfois un véritable défis.

Par exemple j'ai souvent était tout seul. Cette-à-dire avec des gens locaux dont je n'arrivais pas à partager la langue. Je m'attendais à voir quelqu'un du WWF avec moi mais cela n'est pas toujours le cas. Bien sure j'ai toujours été assisté par un interprète si je le souhaitais. Mais il fallait quand même se débrouiller et faire preuve d'initiative pour ne pas s'ennuyer. Le programme souvent n'était pas assez claire et je devais décider ce que je devais faire.

Une bonne préparation c'est peut-être faire du scoutisme ou de l'alpinisme. Cela m'a permis d'anticiper des conditions rudes (grand froid la nuit, chaleur le jour, se sentir mouillé et sale, avoir faim ou soif, supporter fréquemment des longues marches jusqu'à 30 kilomètre). Sans oublier le fait de vivre sans lumière ni douche ni toilette, tout en étant piqué par des moustiques et puces constamment, alors oui il faut vraiment avoir un bon morale. Tout cela s'entend comme un cauchemar mais ce n'est pas le cas. Dans mon cas c'était la durée de presque trois mois que j'ai sous-estimé. C'était long! Mais la chose magique c'est qu'il me reste uniquement des beaux souvenirs. Cela m'a juste renforcé d'aller plus loin en quoi que ce soit.

Ce que j'ai appris en termes de la protection de l'environnement

Dans le projet restauration forestier du paysage Fandriana-Marolambo le WWF est à la recherche des mécanismes de revenu afin d'empêcher les paysans d'exploiter les ressources forestières.

Les communautés Coba se formant des locaux s'engagent par exemple pour l'extraction de l'huile essentielle. Pour cela les locaux ont construit un alambic. Les matériaux qui ne peuvent pas être trouvé sur terrain (comme le béton et le métal) sont fournit par le WWF mais rien de plus. De plus ils élèvent des pépinières et font des grandes plantations d'arbres aromatiques comme le Rafenzara. Ceci se qualifie pour l'extraction de l'huile essentielle. De plus la production de plante peut être vendue dans les villes. Ainsi les gens s'engagent indirectement au reboisement et créent une propre source de revenue à long terme. Dans la tradition locale le travail s'effectue en famille et non pas en communauté. Cependant, avec les premiers fruits de ce programme les communautés ont par exemple déjà pu construire une école primaire. Des investissements en commun profitant à tout le monde sont faits à nouveaux et c'est vers ce modèle que s'oriente la réflexion du WWF.

Pour l'application du concept le WWF agit dans toutes les communautés du corridor avec un ou plusieurs chefs de terrain. Ce dernier se garantit une bonne relation avec les personnes sur le terrain. Seule l'extraction de l'huile essentielle est pratiquée. Le responsable local est également là pour montrer les différentes techniques agricoles offrant un meilleur rendement au paysan (riziculture intensive, construction et entretient d'un étang pour la pisciculture, ricipiciculture, l'élevage des lapins etc.)

Un autre travail du WWF est la sensibilisation des gens aux problèmes environnementaux, en particulier la déforestation des forêts tropicales humides. J'ai participé à la sensibilisation d'un collège de plusieurs centaine d'élève ou le WWF a montré un film pédagogique. De plus nous avons fait soirée thématique en plein air avec du matériel inédit pour les gens du village (hauts parleurs, retro projecteur, une toile de fond). Les gens n'ont jamais vécu une telle fête et ont tous dansé jusqu'au milieu de la nuit.

Pour finir j'ai rencontré des gens convaincu et motivé qui ont participé à la protection de l'environnement et de la forêt tropicale humide, leur forêt en soit.

Mais quelle certitude avons-nous pour le long terme ? Les paysans vont-ils garder un comportement protecteur ou risquent-ils de tomber dans le piège d'une surexploitation forestière ?

A postcard from the underwater world

The underwater world south of Toliara is a beautiful one. Rich in fishes and corals, it is a diver's paradise. Butterfly fish flies around and hordes of snappers pass by in the amazingly coloured coral environment. On the surface a couple of pirogues search for today's catch. I am back after a long day of diving, with a plate full of data and a mind full of impressions.

Precious resources
Having spent my childhood selling crabs at the local market, I have a strong feeling of community with the local fishermen here. Although the living standards of Norwegian and Vezo fishermen are completely different, we have one of the most important things in common; the life with the sea. And the same challenges arrive as well; ocean resources must be managed cleverly to provide a livelihood in the future. Learning the hard way has unfortunately been the rule and not the exception for the developed world's fisheries. For the Vezo, this has to be avoided. If their fisheries collapse, they don't have any alternative.

Securing the Vezo's marine resources is the aim of our project. WWF and NORAD have worked since 2007 to implement sustainable fishery management. Our survey will provide the Vezo with scientific information about their precious resources. And it will give them feedback on their management efforts so far.

A world of corals
In all of this, my job is limited to register corals. This is done by making ten meters long transects on the sea bottom, and note the genre and size of corals. Being precise is imperative, a challenge when waves push you in all possible directions. And identifying corals in itself is not easy. At first glance, all the corals looked the same for me! But weeks of intense training do help. Finally I felt that I could contribute to the group, even if the majority of the other members are professional marine biologists. The limited task of coral registration could eventually be performed even by an economist as myself!

We are surveying six sites from Maromena and south to Ambohibola. A long coastline where the ecosystem is as important as it is beautiful. It provides food and shelter for thousand of species of fish. And food for thousands and thousands of people. Protecting the environment is securing the livelihood of the people. Hopefully, our survey will be a small contribution on the way to achieving this goal.

Climate witness: Pierre Chrysostome, Madagascar

My name is Pierre Chrysostome and I live in the village of Antsikoroke (Ampanihy Ouest) near Androka Vao in southern Madagascar. I am 65 years old but I still feel young. I just retired from a long service as a teacher at the local primary school. Now, I live off my chickens and my sweet potato garden. Two of my sons are fishermen, and they give me some fish when they get some. I have 12 children between the age of 35 and 7. We wanted six, but you know, it's difficult to stop...

Antsikoroke was not always my village. My real hometown doesn't exist anymore. Old Androka became a victim of the change in climate. As long as I can remember the sand dunes have been growing, and they started to threaten Androka Ela.

Then in 2005 came the cyclone Erneste. The cyclone made the river Linta grow big and it destroyed the whole town. We have to abandon Androka Ela, but you can still see the ruins of my old house, now covered by sand and bushes. The dunes still advance, and now they are threatening our fields in Antsikoroke.

There has been a huge change in climate in my lifetime. I remember when it rained from October to February. Now, we have rain from November to January. The rain is also not as regular as before. It can be dry for long periods, even in the rainy season. This is impacting agriculture in my region. I get less and less from my potato and tomato fields each year. Everyone involved in agriculture experience the same. A dryer climate gives lower yields, and many families go hungry. This means that more and more people turn towards the ocean to get food.

I am a Vezo. That means I belong to the fishermen's tribe. I know how to fish, and some of my sons are fishermen. The conditions for fisheries have changed a lot as well. It is much more difficult to be a fisherman now than it was before. When I was young, 2 hours of fishing was enough to fill the boat. Now, they're out there all day and come back with nearly nothing.

There are several reasons for this. First, the dryer climate inland force more people to fish. Second, the river transport more sand now. Deforestation and a dryer climate is the reason for that. The sand covers the reef and fills all holes that the fish, lobsters and octopus like to hide in.

It will be a lot of challenges for my children to stay here in the future. I guess they have to depend on fishing. Some of them are already educated and have moved to Toliara.

Back to Spain and on the road again

As you already know, if you have read until here, the last part of the Explore! Program consists on sharing your experience when coming back home. For that, your imagination is free to choose what to do, but generally you are expected to give about 3 conferences about your volunteer placement.
In my case, I embarked on a new trip, this time around Spain, to give my conferences. Some friends of mine helped me to organize the talks in their universities, and I also stopped in the WWF Office in Madrid and even in my own home University.

Rollin' around Europe

I thought I was done with my duties towards Explore!, but this new small adventure didn't stop there. As I spent the following semester in Brussels, I had the opportunity to share also my experience in WWF Belgium. Moreover, during a non-related trip to Eastern Europe, I took advantage to drop by WWF Poland, and even to give a seminar as guest lecturer for the Master students of Restoration and Management of the Environment, in the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

Closing the cycle

For continuing with the dynamic on the program, these conferences provided me with a lot of new acquaintances and helped me, once again, to learn a lot of new things. This time, the main learning field was communication, and it was a new and interesting challenge to overcome. As I have also written some articles for different publications, I have touched a little of both written, spoken and audiovisual communication procedures, all of them being enormously important in the contemporary world.

The Explore! program was an extremely enriching opportunity for me, and it has been a pleasure to share it in so many places. My audiences were fantastic, and made me always feel like at home. From the technical details of the project to the anecdotes, they welcomed all the information very positively and they were always very interested in all the details and little histories about my placement and the work of WWF in Vondrozo and Madagascar.

Conclusion

To sum up, I encourage all the future volunteers to take as much advantage as possible from this last part of the program. If you make the effort to move around, it will be a very rewarding experience, you will learn a lot and you will make a very good networking. Just go for it!

What did the world get out of this?

But how about the impact, the "change" in Making a Change, the "difference" in Making a Difference? I'm not saying that I didn't have any impact. I did and I wouldn't have without the guidance by the WWF. Lots of volunteers before me reported on the very helpful projects they've been working on. I won't at this point, this is already getting way too long. But I enthusiastically did my work for the WWF. It was very gratifying. I can't and never will be able to estimate the impact I had and will have in the future. But I can't rid myself of the thought that with the money that the WWF and I spent on going through with this program, the region might have profited more from a different investing?

I had my share of the concept "volunteering" and this is my conclusion: It's a good idea to travel to developing countries. It can only help to spend some money there. It's good to stay in one place for longer and really get a thorough picture of it. It's great to lend a hand whenever it's needed while you're there. It's splendid, if you meet people that you want to keep in touch with. And it's over the top if you're so touched by something that you want to get involved and keep on helping someone until you've really made a change together. All this can happen when doing volunteer work. But you can't expect it to happen automatically and even if you do everything right, it might still just not. What it certainly doesn't depend on is the organization you're traveling with.

Funny thing is: I'm lucky, it happened exactly like this for me. I got involved with a local hospital which led to a probably life long involvement in humanitarian aid for that hospital. Working on that I learnt what helping really means. It means that you make people a part of your life for way more than just a few months. It means well distributed sacrifice- you can't do too little, because you feel too strongly for the project, but you also can't do too much, because you won't keep on going, if frustrations are piling up and you can't sleep anymore.

I had to pinch myself again and again when I started traveling, to see if I'm not dreaming. By the end of the program, I've proceeded to slapping myself in the face from time to time. Not because there was any doubt about everything being reality. But to remind myself to keep on being grateful for each moment, to not get too used to it and to take it all in and store it for less fulfilling days of my life.

Conservation et développement : deux notions inconciliables ou complémentaires ?

Comment la conservation peut contribuer au développement durable.

L'une des premières choses qui est souvent dite à propos de l'environnement à Madagascar, c'est que la déforestation par l'Homme y est un phénomène répandu qui a conduit à la disparition d'une grande partie des forêts de l'île. La cause principale de cela est le « tavy » (culture sur brûlis) et le « doro-tanety » (renouvellement du pâturage par le feu), pratiques ancrées dans la tradition malgache. La population est vue comme le principal agent de destruction de cet environnement pourtant unique au monde. La question de la possibilité de concilier conservation de l'environnement et activités humaines et de comment le faire s'est posée avec la prise de conscience environnementale et écologique.

Faut-il vider les réserves et parcs nationaux de toute présence humaine, interdire absolument toute exploitation, comme cela a été le cas pour le parc Kruger en Afrique du Sud, précurseur de la protection de l'environnement créé en 1926 ? Les principales critiques contre cette approche s'appuient sur le fait que sa création n'a entraîné presque aucune retombée économique pour les populations alentour, alors que le parc accueille des milliers de touristes. Ce n'est là qu'un exemple parmi d'autres, beaucoup d'autres parcs ont été constitués en dépossédant les populations locales de leurs terres : Kenya, Amérique du Nord... Cela signifierait-il que la protection de la nature ne pourrait se faire qu'en éliminant son principal destructeur, c'est-à-dire qu'elle ne serait efficace qu'au dépens de l'être humain et de son développement?

Depuis 1992 et le Sommet de la Terre à Rio qui a popularisé les termes de « biodiversité » et de « développement durable », la conservation est devenue un enjeu politique, économique et social, elle est plus que jamais d'actualité. Cette vision où conservation et intégration des populations locales sont inconciliables est dépassée.

Aujourd'hui, dans un monde de 6 milliards d'humains, la conservation a réalisé que pour être efficace, elle ne peut plus exister sans les hommes, mieux, elle doit leur proposer des solutions de développement.
L'expérience de volontariat avec le programme Explore, à Vondrozo, m'a permis de voir et de mieux comprendre ce qu'est la conservation et ce à quoi elle est confrontée dans sa mise en œuvre au quotidien, parce que les populations dont elle vise à préserver l'environnement sont elles-mêmes soumises à des réalités parfois difficiles.

Je suis revenue avec des souvenirs plein la tête, des images plein les yeux, comme cette nuit à Soarano où nous avons laissé l'entrée de la tente à moitié ouverte pour pouvoir s'endormir sous les étoiles, le ciel au-dessus de nos têtes, l'air qui nous rafraîchissait le visage et le bruit des bambous dont les troncs vibrent et s'entrechoquent avec le vent. Ces moments m'ont fait réaliser que si cette expérience de volontariat était si exceptionnelle, c'était en grande partie grâce à ce contexte, ce pays et son environnement, qui mérite vraiment sa qualification d'île-continent et de patrimoine naturel. Mais je suis surtout revenue avec des idées : une vision concrète de la conservation et du travail de ces organismes tels le WWF. J'étais partie avec beaucoup de concepts théoriques sur le développement et sur l'écologie, ces concepts étaient le fruit de mon apprentissage et orientés par la vision qu'en a mon domaine d'étude, la science politique qui fait partie des sciences humaines et sociales. Contrairement aux sciences naturelles qui mettent l'accent sur la biologie, la biodiversité, la faune et la flore, j'avais une vision où entrait d'abord en ligne de compte les aspects humains, socio-économiques et politiques autour de la protection de l'environnement. Je n'avais qu'une vague idée abstraite de ce qu'est la conservation et la biodiversité (au travers des documentaires vus à la télé), même si les valeurs écologiques et la richesse du patrimoine environnemental de la planète, et de Madagascar en particulier, avaient toujours été un centre d'intérêt pour moi.

J'ai pu voir avec quelle motivation mes collègues volontaires s'employaient à apprendre à mieux connaître et à protéger un pays qui n'est pas le leur, et que même certains jeunes Malgaches ne font pas l'effort de connaître. Cet enthousiasme et cette admiration devant les merveilles environnementales malgaches m'ont encore plus motivée dans ce volontariat et j'ai pu apprendre beaucoup à leur contact, notamment en me faisant part de leur façon de voir les choses, eux qui ont un background scientifique.

Mais j'ai aussi pu constater que les Malgaches prenaient aussi en main ce travail de conservation, qu'ils avaient à cœur de partager ces valeurs du WWF et de contribuer au développement de leur pays, qu'ils soient agents du WWF, volontaires ou villageois. Ils m'ont appris beaucoup sur la culture malgache, sur leurs vies quotidiennes et m'ont permis d'en savoir plus sur leurs visions de la conservation, sur les actions à mener et plus globalement, sur leurs ressentis face à ces enjeux auxquels leur pays est confronté. Leurs connaissances de la biodiversité et des réalités locales constituent un appui essentiel au travail de conservation.

Concrètement, la conservation est l'action de protéger, de préserver mais aussi de restaurer l'environnement. Elle est menée par des hommes et des femmes d'action. L'homme est capable de détruire la nature mais aussi de la protéger.

Cependant, il est clair que la première cause de la déforestation et de la dégradation de l'environnement en général est la pauvreté : il est impossible de faire de la conservation sans prendre en compte ce contexte socio-économique, dans ce cas-là, travailler à la conservation, c'est aussi montrer, apprendre aux populations d'autres moyens, façons de gérer leur environnement auquel elles sont liées et dépendantes, afin de réduire leur pression sur celui-ci. Il faut proposer des ressources renouvelables et durables aux populations pour qu'elles délaissent ces ressources fragiles tirées de la forêt et accèdent des activités rémunératrices, sources de développement économique.

Ainsi, c'est créer les conditions nécessaires, donner les capacités/ compétences aux populations afin qu'elles puissent elles-mêmes identifier leurs problèmes et leurs besoins et trouver les solutions : des ONG et des scientifiques parlent de renforcement des capacités ou « empowerment », qui est le premier pas vers la responsabilisation. Cela passe aussi par le fait de permettre à ces populations d'accéder aux droits de base, à la satisfaction de leurs besoins primaires (tel l'accès à l'eau potable) et j'ai pu voir que c'est ce qu'attendaient entre autre les communautés de la part du WWF. C'est le développement social.
Il peut être frustrant de savoir que la conservation de la forêt malgache dépend (en partie) de la politique et des politiques publiques environnementales, qui sont parfois loin des priorités réelles et qui parfois agissent pour le compte d'intérêts pour lesquels l'environnement n'est pas une préoccupation majeure ou est juste une source de profit, exploitable sans aucune règle et aucun respect pour la biodiversité. Mais il y a aussi une autre réalité à prendre en considération, l'Etat malgache comme tout pays en développement (il fait parti des PMA, Pays les Moins Avancés) manquent de moyens financiers, techniques et humains pour avoir une politique réellement efficiente en matière de protection de l'environnement. Et c'est là tout l'intérêt de l'intervention d'organisations comme le WWF et surtout de son approche de la conservation qui sensibilise, fait prendre conscience aux populations et les met face à leur responsabilité en les impliquant dans la gestion de la forêt. Impliquer les populations serait peut-être alors un moyen de suppléer les manques de l'Etat et peut-être aussi de remédier à la corruption, aux pillages et à l'exploitation illégale et irraisonnée que font certains business men et hommes politiques de cet environnement. Cette vision pourrait être qualifiée d'idéaliste, pourtant cette approche qu'a adopté le WWF a fait ses preuves ailleurs dans le monde, c'est le développement intégré et participatif : pour être durable, le développement des populations est envisagé comme global (environnemental, social et économique, voire culturel). Les communautés sont actrices de leur développement, de leur avenir. Et pour avoir travaillé sur la participation des populations aux projets de développement pour mon mémoire de Master, j'ai pu étudier ses effets positifs constatés dans différents pays : cette approche ouvre la voie à l'autonomie des populations impliquées, en suscitant des initiatives locales, en réduisant l'esprit d'assistanat et en favorisant le long terme. Et grâce à ce volontariat, j'en ai vu l'application concrète durant 3 mois et les retombées positives. Les avancées et les progrès sont palpables pour la population qui voit ses conditions de vie s'améliorer, à travers les infrastructures construites par le WWF, comme les barrages et systèmes d'irrigation. L'exemple de la COBA de Vohimarina Nord témoigne de ce qu'une population est capable d'accomplir comme progrès quand elle a pris conscience de sa capacité à changer les choses.

Il est vrai que lorsque je suis dans ma famille à Tana, la protection de l'environnement leur semble une idée totalement secondaire, loin de leurs priorités quotidiennes, cela rejoint le discours de certains selon lequel, dans ces pays-là, il faudrait d'abord résoudre les problèmes urgents que sont la pauvreté, qui engendre le manque d'accès aux droits les plus élémentaires comme le droit à l'eau potable, aux soins de santé, à l'éducation, etc... et que les populations pauvres ne peuvent faire autrement que d'exploiter et dégrader l'environnement. C'est en partie vrai : ces populations n'ont pas vraiment le choix, mais quand on leur donne les moyens de pouvoir agir autrement, par la sensibilisation et des formations par exemple, elles accèdent à cette possibilité de choisir. Mais dire que la conservation et l'écologie n'est pas une priorité, c'est oublier que la biodiversité c'est l'alimentation, les molécules pharmaceutiques destinées aux médicaments (le fameux exemple de la Pervenche de Madagascar, connue pour le traitement du cancer et de la leucémie chez les enfants) et aussi les autres molécules chimiques (huiles essentielles utilisables dans la cosmétique), les matières premières et c'est aussi simplement la beauté, l'esthétique, les paysages malgaches sont merveilleux, d'une beauté à couper le souffle. Ce n'est pas pour rien que Madagascar est l'un des « hotspot » de la diversité biologique mondiale, car « la biodiversité malgache, produit de 3 milliards d'année d'évolution, constitue un patrimoine naturel et une ressource vitale dont l'humanité dépend » selon les scientifiques. Préserver l'environnement malgache serait réellement un bénéfice humain, à la fois environnemental, social et économique.

C'est pourquoi Malgaches et communauté internationale, individus et organisations, doivent agir de concert. La conservation et l'écologie ne sont pas une préoccupation de pays riche, c'est l'affaire de tous, des Etats, des organisations internationales, des ONG et chacun peut y contribuer à sa façon. Moi, j'ai eu l'opportunité de le faire grâce au WWF et à ce volontariat, j'ai pu contribuer à mon niveau, et c'est ce qui m'a plu : c'est cette reconnaissance de l'utilité de mes actions, de mes compétences et de mes connaissances pourtant encore très limitées, en tant que jeune et étudiante, sans grande expérience personnelle ou professionnelle. Le WWF prouve ainsi que chacun peut apporter sa contribution à la protection de l'environnement, qu'on soit agent du WWF, membre de COBA, volontaire, homme, femme, enfant. Vouloir faire changer les choses et avancer vers le développement durable est la motivation principale et l'engagement n'est pas réservé à une minorité « d'idéalistes » ou de spécialistes : les enjeux de la conservation et du développement sont liés et semblent immenses mais chaque petite contribution est utile, l'addition de toute ces volontés et de ces actions rapproche incontestablement des objectifs à atteindre.

J'espère particulièrement dans la prise de conscience des Malgaches, jeunes et moins jeunes, ceux restés au pays tout comme ceux vivants ailleurs. Je me suis rendue compte que je ne connaissais qu'une infime partie de mon pays, j'ai pu le découvrir par ce volontariat et aussi en apprendre plus sur mon identité. Alors aux Malgaches, particulièrement aux jeunes, pourquoi ne pas tenter cette aventure du volontariat avec le WWF, rien que cela en vaut la peine et peut-être que cela vous mènera plus loin que ce que vous pensiez : devenir une personne fière de connaître, de protéger et de promouvoir cet extraordinaire héritage, à l'extérieur et à l'intérieur du pays et cet héritage est l'une des clés du développement de notre île, « ry Tanindrazanay malala, ry Madagasikara soa ». Des jeunes du monde entier sont venus et ont aimé vivre cette expérience à Madagascar, alors pourquoi pas les jeunes Malgaches ?

A life changing experience

Why that "life changing experience" changed my life anyways. This trip sure as hell changed my life forever. Before and throughout my first weeks in Madagascar I thought that making a difference is like pouring water on a world on fire with just your hands to cup it. I just kept on going because I felt obliged to at least try, out of that good old eternal inferiority complex of the privileged child.

Glad I have that, now. Glad to be a cliché, glad to have been guilted into coming to Madagascar by the sheer benevolence life has had towards me. Because I overcame my negativity and I'm profoundly hopeful now that things actually can change, and it's not even that difficult. We say that you can only fall deep, if you went up high. Same goes for the opposite: if a doctor doesn't have anything to work with, every dollar he gets might spare a life that otherwise might have been lost. If there's only one tree left, every planted tree means a doubling of the forestation of the area. If there are only a few turtles left, every single one that doesn't land in someone's pot is a huge chance for the population to recover. And how much is a dollar to western society? And how much of an effort is it to plant a tree? And how hard is it to just leave that poor turtle alone? Compared to the effect of not doing the right thing? You get my point. The glass is half full, verdammt noch mal, if you're determined to pour some more water in it and not just drink it.

Il faut proposer des ressources renouvelables et durables aux populations pour qu'elles délaissent ces ressources fragiles tirées de la forêt et accèdent des activités rémunératrices, sources de développement économique.

Ainsi, c'est créer les conditions nécessaires, donner les capacités/ compétences aux populations afin qu'elles puissent elles-mêmes identifier leurs problèmes et leurs besoins et trouver les solutions : des ONG et des scientifiques parlent de renforcement des capacités ou « empowerment », qui est le premier pas vers la responsabilisation. Cela passe aussi par le fait de permettre à ces populations d'accéder aux droits de base, à la satisfaction de leurs besoins primaires (tel l'accès à l'eau potable) et j'ai pu voir que c'est ce qu'attendaient entre autre les communautés de la part du WWF. C'est le développement social.
Il peut être frustrant de savoir que la conservation de la forêt malgache dépend (en partie) de la politique et des politiques publiques environnementales, qui sont parfois loin des priorités réelles et qui parfois agissent pour le compte d'intérêts pour lesquels l'environnement n'est pas une préoccupation majeure ou est juste une source de profit, exploitable sans aucune règle et aucun respect pour la biodiversité. Mais il y a aussi une autre réalité à prendre en considération, l'Etat malgache comme tout pays en développement (il fait parti des PMA, Pays les Moins Avancés) manquent de moyens financiers, techniques et humains pour avoir une politique réellement efficiente en matière de protection de l'environnement. Et c'est là tout l'intérêt de l'intervention d'organisations comme le WWF et surtout de son approche de la conservation qui sensibilise, fait prendre conscience aux populations et les met face à leur responsabilité en les impliquant dans la gestion de la forêt. Impliquer les populations serait peut-être alors un moyen de suppléer les manques de l'Etat et peut-être aussi de remédier à la corruption, aux pillages et à l'exploitation illégale et irraisonnée que font certains business men et hommes politiques de cet environnement. Cette vision pourrait être qualifiée d'idéaliste, pourtant cette approche qu'a adopté le WWF a fait ses preuves ailleurs dans le monde, c'est le développement intégré et participatif : pour être durable, le développement des populations est envisagé comme global (environnemental, social et économique, voire culturel). Les communautés sont actrices de leur développement, de leur avenir. Et pour avoir travaillé sur la participation des populations aux projets de développement pour mon mémoire de Master, j'ai pu étudier ses effets positifs constatés dans différents pays : cette approche ouvre la voie à l'autonomie des populations impliquées, en suscitant des initiatives locales, en réduisant l'esprit d'assistanat et en favorisant le long terme. Et grâce à ce volontariat, j'en ai vu l'application concrète durant 3 mois et les retombées positives. Les avancées et les progrès sont palpables pour la population qui voit ses conditions de vie s'améliorer, à travers les infrastructures construites par le WWF, comme les barrages et systèmes d'irrigation. L'exemple de la COBA de Vohimarina Nord témoigne de ce qu'une population est capable d'accomplir comme progrès quand elle a pris conscience de sa capacité à changer les choses.

Il est vrai que lorsque je suis dans ma famille à Tana, la protection de l'environnement leur semble une idée totalement secondaire, loin de leurs priorités quotidiennes, cela rejoint le discours de certains selon lequel, dans ces pays-là, il faudrait d'abord résoudre les problèmes urgents que sont la pauvreté, qui engendre le manque d'accès aux droits les plus élémentaires comme le droit à l'eau potable, aux soins de santé, à l'éducation, etc... et que les populations pauvres ne peuvent faire autrement que d'exploiter et dégrader l'environnement. C'est en partie vrai : ces populations n'ont pas vraiment le choix, mais quand on leur donne les moyens de pouvoir agir autrement, par la sensibilisation et des formations par exemple, elles accèdent à cette possibilité de choisir. Mais dire que la conservation et l'écologie n'est pas une priorité, c'est oublier que la biodiversité c'est l'alimentation, les molécules pharmaceutiques destinées aux médicaments (le fameux exemple de la Pervenche de Madagascar, connue pour le traitement du cancer et de la leucémie chez les enfants) et aussi les autres molécules chimiques (huiles essentielles utilisables dans la cosmétique), les matières premières et c'est aussi simplement la beauté, l'esthétique, les paysages malgaches sont merveilleux, d'une beauté à couper le souffle. Ce n'est pas pour rien que Madagascar est l'un des « hotspot » de la diversité biologique mondiale, car « la biodiversité malgache, produit de 3 milliards d'année d'évolution, constitue un patrimoine naturel et une ressource vitale dont l'humanité dépend » selon les scientifiques. Préserver l'environnement malgache serait réellement un bénéfice humain, à la fois environnemental, social et économique.

C'est pourquoi Malgaches et communauté internationale, individus et organisations, doivent agir de concert. La conservation et l'écologie ne sont pas une préoccupation de pays riche, c'est l'affaire de tous, des Etats, des organisations internationales, des ONG et chacun peut y contribuer à sa façon. Moi, j'ai eu l'opportunité de le faire grâce au WWF et à ce volontariat, j'ai pu contribuer à mon niveau, et c'est ce qui m'a plu : c'est cette reconnaissance de l'utilité de mes actions, de mes compétences et de mes connaissances pourtant encore très limitées, en tant que jeune et étudiante, sans grande expérience personnelle ou professionnelle. Le WWF prouve ainsi que chacun peut apporter sa contribution à la protection de l'environnement, qu'on soit agent du WWF, membre de COBA, volontaire, homme, femme, enfant. Vouloir faire changer les choses et avancer vers le développement durable est la motivation principale et l'engagement n'est pas réservé à une minorité « d'idéalistes » ou de spécialistes : les enjeux de la conservation et du développement sont liés et semblent immenses mais chaque petite contribution est utile, l'addition de toute ces volontés et de ces actions rapproche incontestablement des objectifs à atteindre.

J'espère particulièrement dans la prise de conscience des Malgaches, jeunes et moins jeunes, ceux restés au pays tout comme ceux vivants ailleurs. Je me suis rendue compte que je ne connaissais qu'une infime partie de mon pays, j'ai pu le découvrir par ce volontariat et aussi en apprendre plus sur mon identité. Alors aux Malgaches, particulièrement aux jeunes, pourquoi ne pas tenter cette aventure du volontariat avec le WWF, rien que cela en vaut la peine et peut-être que cela vous mènera plus loin que ce que vous pensiez : devenir une personne fière de connaître, de protéger et de promouvoir cet extraordinaire héritage, à l'extérieur et à l'intérieur du pays et cet héritage est l'une des clés du développement de notre île, « ry Tanindrazanay malala, ry Madagasikara soa ». Des jeunes du monde entier sont venus et ont aimé vivre cette expérience à Madagascar, alors pourquoi pas les jeunes Malgaches ?

Good Food is GREAT for Conservation

Holistic conservation has nothing, yet everything, to do with the rainforest. During our three-month placement in southeastern Madagascar we were responsible for touring a series of seminars that were focused on food:

· How to efficiently grow rice using SRI techniques

· How to grow novel crops such as beans, peanuts, and garden vegetables (zucchini, eggplant, carrots, and cucumber, to name a few)

· How to cook nutritionally complete meals

As a bit of a foodie myself, I was thrilled to tour this seminar series but eventually begged the question – what, exactly, does this have to do with the rainforest? In coming to Madagascar I had assumed we would be involved with more traditional conservation work like building tree nurseries (although we certainly did plenty of this too!). Some open-minded brainstorming enlightens the link to how good food is great for the rainforest.

The Situation

The Malagasy are poor; one of the poorest countries in the world. Every day is an effort and often a struggle to provide food for their families; especially in between growing seasons. Malnutrition and starvation are rampant, and if you have ever been hungry – I mean, really hungry – you will understand how hard it is to focus on much else when your physiology is raging at you to find something to eat. Hunger and poverty, undoubtedly, lead to desperate measures. In the case of the Malagasy, they are compelled to continue slash-and-burn practices (known as tavy) on their rainforest to make way for more cattle-grazing pasture and rice crops to feed their families. It is a system that they have used since humans first arrived on the island which is effective in the short-term, but inefficient and highly destructive in the long-term.

The result is a vortex perpetuating deforestation out of a demand for food. And who can blame them? Imagine you are a Malagasy living in the Vondrozo Corridor: you live in the same village that you were born in, with your parents, your six brothers and sisters, and your own family of eight children to care for in addition to actively looking out for the well-being of your neighbours. This last point pays tribute to fihavanana, a defining element of Malagasy culture whereby sharing and helping those in your community is of the utmost importance. Now you are faced with a drought. In a community of 200 people, you know your rice crop will not yield enough without the rains to feed everyone. What else can you do but enlist the only tool you know to alleviate this horrific pressure – clear another acre of rainforest for rice crop. It is a modest parcel to sacrifice, and you know it will get you through. Next year you find that the land your father cleared 20 years ago has become terminally fallow and will no longer yield any crop anymore. Your kids are getting older, stronger, and need more food to fuel them as they join you in the rice paddies as keen apprentice farmers. You need just a little more land ...

Now blow this scenario up to the length of a generation, or several generations of farmers. These one-acre sacrifices become substantial chunks of fragmented, damaged, and missing forest. Changes in forest cover lead to erosion and loss of fertile topsoil, they dry out water sources and, ultimately, alter the climate leading to more frequent droughts, failed crops, and more hunger. The cycle continues.

Here is where Holistic Conservation comes in:

WWF in Madagascar is working with rural communities to optimize both food availability and the nutritional quality of their food without the need to clear more rainforest. Sharing SRI (System for Rice Intensification) farming techniques is a pivotal step to overcoming the pull of the deforestation vortex. By contrast to traditional farming techniques, SRI eliminates the stunted growth of overcrowded rice crops from root competition and helps each individual plant grow to its most fruitful, healthy form. There is some resistance to adopting these techniques: by simple schematic reasoning (see the diagram on the right), it is hard to fathom that SRI could possibly be more productive than traditional methods.

But those "pilot farmers" that have tested the technique on small parcels of their land have boasted yield increases three-times that of traditional methods! We hope that a few success-cases throughout the countryside will lead to mass adoption of SRI practices, for we know that neighbours respect, trust, and share with each other by way of fihavanana.

Beyond SRI, WWF is bringing seeds and seminars on novel crops that villages might grow in a vegetable garden to round out their diet. Beans and peanuts add a cheap and robust source of protein to the primary diet of rice, while other vegetables such as carrots, zucchini, and eggplant provide essential vitamins and nutrients to their diet. With a well-rounded meal plan comes improved energy and endurance which in turn contributes to productivity in the fields, in relationships, and in school.

Ambodemanga was the first village I visited alongside Kuni and Sergio. Our charismatic WWF agent in sustainable agriculture, Donne, presented the basic method for growing red kidney beans to a packed schoolhouse of over 60 people. Several minutes into our presentation an elderly gentleman raises his hand with a look of growing concern on his face. He apologizes profusely for the interruption and admits that he would love to grow these 'red kidney beans', but what, exactly, were they for? This anecdote stands testament to two things: 1) the incredible eagerness of rural communities to learn and adapt; and 2) the need for truly holistic programming on the part of non-profit aide.

With the WWF, this need was addressed as we entered the kitchens of rural communities to share with them preparation techniques for the novel crops to make delicious and nutritious meals. We became nearly fluent in Malagasy at describing how to incorporate the three food groups into a dish:

· Sakafo mavo – The "yellow" group, representing sources of carbohydrate like rice, cassava, and potatoes

· Sakafo mena – The "red" group, representing sources of protein like chicken, beef, peanuts, beans, and eggs.

· Sakafo maitso – The "green" group, representing sources of essential vitamins and nutrients like bananas, mangos, tomatoes, carrots, and zucchini.

Our personal favourite dish was a delightful cake called Gena Gena, made from kazaha, akondro, voanjo, atody, sy siramamy. Cassava, bananas, peanuts, eggs, and sugar. If you care to try it out yourself, check out our video!

The communities we visited in the Vonodrozo Corridor were already well aware of the value and necessity of their rainforest; after all, they are wholly reliant on its natural resources for day-to-day subsistence. As the extent of the forest diminishes, they are becoming aware that something has to change. For example, we often noticed bizarre forested-hilltops in otherwise deforested regions. Here, the rainforest had been preserved because it was recognized to be a source of water that would dry up without protection from the trees. Evidence of these environmental acknowledgements and efforts give me hope that these communities will whole-heartedly adopt and adapt the sustainable living principles we shared with them to suit their needs and guide their future development. With improved food security, they will have the time for contemplating other things, like the role of the rainforest to their communities and protecting their culture and natural treasures for future generations.
