This book was prepared and published in the frames of the EU and ADA financed regional project Improving Forest Law Enforcement and Governance in the European Neighborhood Policy East Countries and Russia (ENPI-FLEG) as an activity implemented by WWF Armenia.

The book consists of sections describing physical-geographical conditions of Northern Armenia, the forests and their importance, specially protected nature areas, legislative grounds for the use of non-wood forest products, as well as special sections devoted to forest plants and mushrooms.

This brochure and map have been produced in the framework of the regional project Improving Forest Law Enforcement and Governance in the European Neighborhood Policy East Countries and Russia (ENPI FLEG) financed by the European Union and the Austrian Development Cooperation as an activity implemented by WWF-Armenia.

This publication briefly presents the specially protected nature areas (SPNAs) and forests of Armenia. It consists of two parts – a map and a brochure. The map demonstrates the SPNAs and forests of Armenia and the brochure with photos provides brief information on SPNAs and forests including flora, fauna, peculiarities, ecotourism opportunities etc.

The Guide on the Forest Legislation of Armenia

This guide has been produced in the framework of the regional project Improving Forest Law Enforcement and Governance in the European Neighborhood Policy East Countries and Russia (ENPI FLEG) financed by the European Union and the Austrian Development Cooperation as an activity implemented by WWF-Armenia.

The guide on the forest legislation of Armenia is the first attempt of complex commentary of the Forest Code of RA and relevant provisions of other legal acts forming the system of RA Forest legislation.

Ecoregion Conservation Plan for the Caucasus

Ecoregion Conservation Plan is a result of a collaborative effort involving many people and the progress made in implementing the plan is due to the efforts of many different actors: they include the government authorities responsible for nature protection and biodiversity conservation, NGOs and scientific institutions.

The first edition of the Plan was presented back in 2006. In the next coming years some priorities changed, some new priorities added and it has become necessary to update the document. Preparation of the revised edition was coordinated by the Caucasus Biodiversity Council with support of WWF Caucasus PO. The action plan and the feedback from experts were reviewed at a special meeting of the CBC held 8th March 2012 in Batumi, Georgia, with the participation of the representatives of GOs, NGOs and scientific institutions.

It summarizes the objectives, activities, and expected results of the project.

Strategic Guidelines for Responding to Impacts of Global Climate Change on Forests in the Southern Caucasus

The impacts of climate change on forests are likely to be substantial, and the negative impacts many times greater than any positive impacts. Forestry agencies and forest managers in some countries have already started to take practical steps to mitigate the impacts of climate change on forests. Comparison of present forest cover in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia with the potential forest cover determined by the study indicates that 55% of forest cover has been cleared, equivalent to 5 million hectares from a potential former area of 9 million hectares.
The governments of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are now committed to elaborating and implementing forest adaptation strategies. Those strategies must address research needs, educational needs, information to evaluate how forests respond to climate change, the mitigation and adaptation options that are available, barriers to implementing mitigation and adaptation measures, the policies and instruments that need to be put in place, and monitoring to identify problems and allow an early response.

Specially Protected Nature Areas of Armenia and Socio-Economic Development of Communities

This publication presents brief information on Specially Protected Nature Areas of Armenia (SPNAs) of Armenia as well as available information on the projects and activities implemented by different organizations aimed at socio-economic development of communities adjacent to SPNAs to reduce the pressure on natural resources. It shows ongoing activites and those implemented in this field during the recent years, in particular community development activities implemented with financial support of different donors.

The separate chapter presents an opportunity for Community - SPNA Business trilateral cooperation offered by WWF-Armenia, which is aimed at community sustainable development and biodiversity protection. There are also examples of business support to SPNAs and communities.

Development and publication of this brochure was done by WWF-Armenia with financial support of MAVA Fondation Pour La Nature in the framework of the project "Protected Areas for a Living Planet - Caucasus Region."

Delivering on CBD commitments

The brochure summarizes results of the review of the implementation of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in the Caucasus Ecoregion. It also highlights key developments and defines future needs and priorities to fill existing gaps in achieving the set objectives of the PoWPA. The PoWPA implementation was reviewed for five counties of the Caucasus Ecoregion – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Turkey. With the exception of some specific issues in Russia and Turkey, the given review mostly covers only areas of those countries found within the Caucasus Ecoregion.

Investments in Protected Areas of Armenia: Present and Future

The "Investments in Protected Areas of Armenia: Present and Future" bilingual (English & Armenian) brochure is a summary of the investments made in the field of specially protected nature areas (SPNAs) in Armenia so far, including public, private, and international funding, as well as of main activities implemented in this field during recent years.

The goal of this publication is to showcase the role of investments in the development of SPNAs. The information is arranged by investing agencies and organizations. The publication presents also the development perspectives for the protected areas of Armenia and needs to be addressed by future investments as contribution to development of SPNAs and more efficient protection of biodiversity in Armenia.

The map of specially protected nature areas of Armenia was published in the frames of "Protected Areas Programme 2012 - Caucasus Ecoregion" project with the financial support of MAVA Foundation Pour La Nature. The map includes 3 existing state reserves, 2 national parks, 25 state sanctuaries and 7 planned protected areas with their photos and background information.

In harmony with nature

This video was broadcast on two popular TV channels of Armenia for 160 times during the month of campaign on "Reserves and National Parks of Armenia" held at Armenia Marriot Hotel this year.

It aims to promote wider outreach and public awareness on importance of specially protected nature areas in Armenia.

The reserves and national parks are established to contribute to nature protection, biological diversity conservation and its natural reproduction, careful and sustainable use of bioresources, which are among major prerequisites for development of Armenia. They help protect species, landscapes and water recourses, support livelihoods for local people, and provide tourism and recreational opportunities.

Threats to protected areas in Armenia are poaching, illegal wildlife trade, illegal logging, mining and infrastructure development.

Causes of the threats are poor governance, inadequate policies and laws, lack of alternative livelihoods, lack of financial resources, low public awareness.

Solutions are sustainable funding of PAs, human - wildlife conflict resolution, alternative livelihoods for local people, participation of local people in establishment and management of PAs, equitable and fair share of costs and benefits from PAs.
