Dulsco supports with graffiti cleaning and recycling.

Fujairah, May 2, 2013: 150 volunteers, led by Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) and Fujairah Municipality carried out a cleanup campaign in the mountain protected Wadi Wurayah on May 1st. H.E. Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, Managing Director of Fujairah Municipality, Mr. Anada Tiéga, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands and Dr. Lew Young the senior advisor of Ramsar convention for Asia-Oceania, attended the event.

The cleanup day is considered a necessary step to prevent further degradation of the wadi's wildlife and freshwater and will be followed by temporarily limiting access to the area to minimise further pressure on its ecosystem. Meanwhile details of the National Park's management plan are being put in place by EWS-WWF.

H.E. Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Afkham of Fujairah Municipality said: "We are honored to join hands with EWS-WWF, the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands, and volunteers from across the emirates on this cleanup day and beyond. It is crucial to protect this naturally rich area from further degradation and identify its biodiversity as an integral and unique part of the United Arab Emirates' nature. We would like to thank all partners and volunteers for their continuous collaboration and support, and welcome this activity as a further step in establishing Wadi Wurayah National Park."

In January of this year, the Government of Fujairah appointed EWS-WWF to spearhead the development of Wadi Wurayah National Park and implement the management plan for the park to be of international standards and high quality.

Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General said: "With a number of recent developments, such as the appointment of EWS-WWF to lead the development of the National Park in January, the establishment of the Middle East Water Research Centre in partnership with HSBC Middle East and Earthwatch as well as this community-led cleanup activity, important steps are being taken to realize the vision of the protected area and these actions serve to highlight the commitment of all parties involved to strengthen our efforts to conserve the beautiful and unique nature within Wadi Wurayah, recognized by Ramsar as a wetland of International Importance. We would also like to thank all the volunteers that came to help us with the cleanup."

With the help of 150 volunteers, the cleanup activities focused on the graffiti and waste in certain zones in the wadi especially around the popular area of the waterfall. Mr. Anada Tiéga, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands said: "It is extremely important to raise awareness on the significance of conserving freshwater ecosystems around the world. The current conservation efforts in Wadi Wuaryah are a good way to drive collective action to find solutions on how to better manage water resources in the area for now and the future."

In 2009, the wadi joined the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands as a site of international importance for biodiversity conservation, demonstrating yet again that this area remains an important stronghold for wildlife in the UAE.

All the waste collected from the cleanup day will be recycled by Dulsco. Other than waste management, Dulsco provided manpower and supply services for all volunteers. Post the cleanup day, Dulsco will continue working for the next few weeks till the graffiti cleaning is fully completed. Dulsco's involvement in the cleanup day highlights their commitment as private entity that works on ensuring sustainability in what they do and how they operate.

Crown Prince of Fujairah, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Sharqi, welcomes the establishment of the first fresh water research and learning centre of its kind in the Gulf

Research centre to contribute towards understanding of freshwater resources vital to the region, thanks to five-year collaboration between Government of Fujairah, HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd, Earthwatch and EWS-WWF

Fujairah, April 21 2013: The Government of Fujairah, Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd and Earthwatch today announce through this unique public private partnership, the development of an environmental research and learning centre within Wadi Wurayah National Park in Fujairah.

The purpose of the new centre will be to promote research and learning within the Middle East into the provision and protection of precious freshwater resources. Research into freshwater is highly important to the region, which has an arid climate and experiences limited rainfall. To realise this vision, construction of the centre has started just outside the protected zone of the wadi.

The Crown Prince of Fujairah, His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Sharqi said: "It is important to continue the research and increase the knowledge about the unique biodiversity of Wadi Wurayah in order to further enhance our conservation efforts.

"It is a pleasure to welcome this collaboration of EWS-WWF, HSBC and Earthwatch. The research centre will be a useful platform for people from across the MENA region to learn more about freshwater and species depending upon this precious resource."

The centre that is funded by HSBC, will be supported by Government of Fujairah and will run a 5-year programme that is delivered jointly between Earthwatch and EWS-WWF. This programme will operate field research as well as educational activities and in turn support the ongoing conservation activities within Wadi Wurayah National Park.

An official Memorandum of Understanding was signed by His Excellency Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Afkham representing the Government of Fujairah; Ida Tillisch, Director General of EWS-WWF; Ammar Shams, Regional Head of Corporate Sustainability at HSBC Bank Middle East and Sarah Brown, Programme Manager for Europe and the Middle East, from Earthwatch.

The MoU further illustrates the Government of Fujairah's ongoing support for Wadi Wurayah National Park. The Government of Fujairah has been working closely with EWS-WWF since 2006 in Wadi Wurayah.

In 2009, the area was designated a Protected Area by H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammad Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, making it the first Mountain Protected Area in the United Arab Emirates. This declaration marked the successful conclusion of a three-year project, also sponsored by HSBC Bank Middle East Limited. In January 2o12, EWS-WWF was appointed by the Government of Fujairah to develop the management plan for the protected area and has been working closely with Fujairah Municipality on this.

H.E. Engineer Mohammed Saif Al Afkham of Fujairah Municipality said: "We are delighted to continue the successful governmental, private sector and NGO partnership and happy to welcome Earthwatch. Together we can take the right steps to establish a research and learning centre and programme in Wadi Wurayah National Park, and involve HSBC volunteers and other citizens in science. It is important to protect this naturally rich area in a way that aligns with our cultural and developmental needs, while recognising its rich biodiversity as an integral and unique part of the United Arab Emirates' natural heritage. We would like to thank HSBC for their continuous support in Wadi Wurayah in collaboration with EWS-WWF."

Ammar Shams of HSBC Bank Middle East said: "Water scarcity is a huge problem around the world and almost 60% of the countries that do not have access to fresh water, are here in the Middle East. This is a basic human necessity and something we're committed to improving – through funding or through the time and dedication of our volunteers. Partnering with EWS-WWF and Earthwatch in the development of this research centre will ensure that collectively, we can find solutions to help us better manage our water resources and ensure lasting improvements for communities in this region now and in the future."

Ida Tillisch of EWS-WWF, said: "We are grateful to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, for welcoming this partnership for further field research in Wadi Wurayah National Park. We aim to strengthen our scope with the help of extensive freshwater research, in order to make important conservation decisions and inspire those partaking to better understand the challenges and highlight solutions in freshwater conservation in the country that are also highly relevant to the region."

Nigel Winser, Executive Vice President of Earthwatch said: "Earthwatch is very excited to be part of this collaborative initiative. As an organisation committed to conserving the diversity and integrity of life on earth, we recognize that this programme gives us a unique opportunity to engage people in the UAE and wider Middle East in scientific field research and education and will lead to a more sustainable environment for the beautiful Wadi Wurayah area and hopefully for freshwater habitats in the wider region."

The next step will be for EWS-WWF and Earthwatch to establish and implement the programme in collaboration and the support of the Government of Fujairah, Fujairah Municipality and HSBC Middle East. This in turn, will ensure the environmental integrity of the project, through an in-depth process involving local, regional and international experts to ensure that the conservation of the wadi's biodiversity keeps the needs of the local community in mind.

Since being declared the UAE's first protected mountain area, continuous research has been carried out in the area with the installation of camera traps. 56 new species have been found as recently as September 2012 including insects, arachnids and crustaceans: 26 of whom are considered new-to-science.
In October 2010, Wadi Wurayah was recognised as a "Wetland of International Importance" under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, with a high ecological significance thanks to its freshwater resources.

Next generations have the right to inherit a clean & safe environment."

He added: "The unity of nations and people in addressing the challenges of Climate Change is the best and shortest path in maintaining Earth's climate."

Meanwhile, thousands of people across the country marked Earth Hour on Saturday evening (yesterday) by switching off the lights and pledging to long-term change for a more sustainable world.

2013 saw all major cities from the emirates plunge into darkness to join more than 150 countries around the world making it the largest ever participation during the history of Earth Hour.

World-renowned buildings such as the Burj Khalifa (tallest building in the world) and the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and EtihadTowers in Abu Dhabi and Al Qasbah in Sharjah were added to a long list of prestigious global landmarks who switched off their lights including Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Great Wall of China, the Gateway of India, the Eiffel Tower and the Tower of Pisa.

Public events were held around the emirates to celebrate this global event, which were planned by a plethora organisations and groups. Some of the events included a candle-lit walk on Abu Dhabi Corniche accompanied by drum beats, a candle-lit event on Fujairah Corniche, a series of workshops and family activities in al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah, a competition to create art from scrap materials in Dubai Silicon Oasis, a photography competition to capture Earth Hour UAE's lights out landmarks, and glow-in-the-dark table-tennis tournament at Jumeirah Rotana in Dubai. Burj Plaza also buzzed with people and families that joined an Earth Hour walk during the hour, in DEWA's Earth Hour event.

Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General of EWS-WWF said: "We are extremely grateful of the support afforded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Earth Hour and congratulate UAE residents in making Earth Hour 2013 even bigger and more impactful. Once again the UAE community demonstrated its commitment to Earth Hour by switching off the lights, hosting community events and really making the campaign come to life. Of course, while we can celebrate the successes of this year's event, we should not forget that Earth Hour acts as a reminder to us all to consider ways we can reduce our impact on the planet and work towards a more sustainable future.

"The I Will If You Will platform is a fantastic way for the UAE to continue working towards a sustainable future by challenging friends, colleagues and family to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. Pledges can still be made on youtube.com/earthhour and we urge everyone to either accept someone else's environmental pledge or to create a new one. By working together, as Earth Hour proves, we can all make a change to the future of our planet that goes beyond just one hour. Turning off the lights is just the beginning and we are asking the UAE to help make every hour, Earth Hour."

The Earth Hour 2012 I Will If You Will campaign will continue on the Earth Hour YouTube platform - Dare the World to Save the Planet.

This hour of darkness is a symbol of environmental action and is taking place at 8:30 pm local time on Saturday 23rd of March, 2013.

Encouraging UAE residents to make Earth Hour 2013 bigger and better than before, Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General of Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF commented: "Last year UAE Earth Hour was a big success, and this would not have been possible without the hard work of our partners and individual supporters who helped organise events across the country, spreading the conservation message and committing to long term change."

"We hope that businesses, organisations, communities and individuals will not only join us by switching off for one hour but will also take this opportunity and commit to long term environmental action. For her 2013 I Will If You Will challenge, Tillisch promises to cook a sustainable seafood lunch for 50 people that are randomly selected from the signups for Earth Hour, if 500 UAE residents were to accept her challenge: "I Will If You Will is a great platform to inspire the change that you want to see in the world. In addition to facilitating action among the community"
Since its beginning as a one city initiative in Sydney 7 years ago, WWF's Earth Hour has grown to be one of the largest environmental movements in the world, seeing the participation of over 6950 cities in 153 countries across all continents in 2012.

In UAE in 2012, saw the official participation of 22 towns and cities from across all seven emirates. Thousands of residents had the opportunity to join public and community events that swept the different emirates, while many of the UAE's buildings also switched off all non-essential lights. It is estimated that Earth Hour reached over 3 million UAE residents.

Earth Hour 2013 is currently expecting world-renowned buildings such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and Al Qasbah in Sharjah will be added to a long list of prestigious global landmarks that will go dark as a symbolic gesture to remind people of the importance of conserving energy. By working on other initiatives in Abu Dhabi, such as Waterwise and Powerwise, we understand it is crucial to look at energy and water conservation as a vehicle to reduce carbon emissions and we believe the Ecological Footprint Initiative will have a lasting impact in building a sustainable future for the UAE."

The Initiative pools experts in a unique public-private partnership between the Ministry of Environment and Water, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA), Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), and the Global Footprint Network. The Initiative is also governed by a federal steering committee, chaired by HE Dr Rashid Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water.

Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General at EWS-WWF, said: "By trying to understand the costs, benefits and consequences beyond a reduction in carbon, the Initiative aims to help decision makers prioritise policies that reduce the country's carbon footprint and benefit the economy. We are very grateful for the Bureau's support, which will now enable us to move forward with this important work to model the socio-economic and environmental implications of different policies to reduce the UAE's footprint."

The second phase of the Ecological Footprint Initiative focuses on two main tracks:

Track one will focus on developing energy efficiency standards for lighting, as well as developing a comprehensive policy around the standard in close association with Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA).

Track two will focus on conducting a socio-economic assessment of the policies included in the ecological footprint scenario model created in the initiative's first phase. This assessment will look at the social and economic impacts of energy and water reduction policies to help inform decision makers.

The Initiative will also be reviewing and verifying the UAE's Ecological Footprint accounts in advance of the biennial publication of the Living Planet Report.

The accolade is in line with their commitment to the 'Heroes of the UAE' designed to encourage all sectors of society across the UAE to reduce their carbon footprint.

By implementing technical and behavioural changes such as installing fittings that reduce water flow, maintaining and upgrading air conditioning and ventilation systems, introducing LED lighting and reducing lighting and AC usage, these organisations achieved savings between 28%-89% in water consumption and 11-55% in energy consumption over 12 continuous months.

Recognised for successfully fulfilling three pledges required by the programme, which resulted in each organisation lowering its carbon emissions from energy and water by at least 10%, these five organisations are now paving the way for others to reduce their energy and water consumption in the near future. Carbon emissions from energy and water contribute highly to the country's carbon footprint yet through the Heroes of the UAE, organisations are taking strides towards lowering this footprint.

Congratulating the Verified Corporate Heroes on their success and calling for further action, HE Dr. Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water stated; "We all have a responsibility to facilitate a transition towards a sustainable future for the UAE and lower the country's high per capita footprint. It is inspirational to see these Verified Corporate Heroes taking significant steps towards carbon reduction. The private sector contributes 30% towards the UAE's Ecological Footprint, and thus can play an important role in tackling this issue."

The Heroes Private Sector Programme aims to help organizations lower their carbon emissions in their daily operations and manage them in the long-term. The programme offers guidance, an online toolkit, and reporting frameworks to enable organisations to make this transition, as well as share their best practices and challenges through case studies that document their environmental journey.

H.E. Razan Khalifa al Mubarak, Secretary General of EAD, commented, "Public, private and civil society partnerships, such as Heroes of the UAE, that help inform science-based policy are crucial to facilitate lasting changes to reduce the UAE´s carbon footprint and that are environmentally, socially and economically beneficial. It is with much anticipation that as a result of these organisations' efforts, we will continue to see the business community contributing to reducing the country's ecological footprint."

The Heroes of the UAE Private Sector Programme was launched in 2010 by EWS-WWF, in partnership with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) and endorsement from the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW). Ernst & Young has provided technical support to verify carbon reductions, making the 'Heroes of the UAE' the only national voluntary carbon reduction programme verified by a third party.

Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General of EWS-WWF explained; "The accomplishments of these organisations show that it is feasible to make changes in the workplace that reduce carbon emissions and result in financial savings. The case studies serve as an important tool for other UAE organisations to overcome barriers and understand the best ways to reduce their carbon emissions. These examples show that the 10% reduction target is very achievable and that it is easy to go above and beyond it using low-cost measures.

"These five organisations went through an independent verification process of their reductions, and we are pleased to announce that they have now been verified as achieving their pledges in the first cycle of the programme. They have played an active role towards reducing the UAE's Ecological Footprint and helping to tackle climate change and we hope their example will inspire more organisations across the country."
The Heroes of the UAE asks organisations to commit to three pledges:

1. Develop and implement a measurable strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with energy and water consumption by 10% each over 12 continuous months.

2. Document the results achieved and submit to Heroes of the UAE to help other organisations do the same

3. Commit to develop and implement a long-term strategy for the organisation's annual carbon footprint reduction and allow independent auditors access to the environmental audits and review activities.

Savings made by the Verified Corporate Heroes

Company

Electricity: % CO2 reduced

Water: % CO2 reduced

Service City

18%

28%

AUS

12%

39%

Crowne Plaza

21%

31%

ArchCorps

55%

89%

Tecom

11%

29%

To read the case study summaries of the Verified Corporate Heroes, click here.

To read the full case studies of the Verified Corporate Heroes, please visit our Heroes of the UAE website.

In 2009, this important area was designated a Protected Area by HH Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammad Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, making it the first Mountain Protected Area in the United Arab Emirates.

The agreement that has been signed today is considered an important milestone that further solidifies the support of the Fujairah Government and Municipality by appointing EWS-WWF to lead on the establishment of the Wadi Wurayah National Park and committing to provide the resources needed to realise the vision for the Protected Area.

H.E. Mohammed Al Afkham, Managing Director of Fujairah Municipality said: "We are delighted to see our partnership with EWS-WWF take a significant step forward, and we will all be working together to establish the Wadi Wurayah National Park as a distinguished example in the country and the world.

"We are committed to establishing a sustainable Protected Area, integrating local tradition and lifestyle with the conservation of inimitable biodiversity and habitat. It is important for us to protect this rich area in a way that aligns with our culture and developmental needs, while always keeping the environmental integrity of the natural ecosystems that supports its flora and fauna as the main focus and the cornerstone of our work."

Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General said: "We are grateful to the Fujairah Government for their commitment and for putting forward the necessary resources in order to conserve Wadi Wurayah and its unique biodiversity, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. With this agreement, we aim to strengthen our efforts to ensure that this wonderful place of real nature is conserved and the species within it protected".

The next step will be to establish a management board to advise and assess the work plans for the National Park. This approach will ensure that the management plan not only values the environmental integrity of the project, but also look at the best suited solutions for the emirate through implementing best practices. This will also be followed by an in-depth consultation process involving local, regional and international experts to ensure that the conservation of the wadi's biodiversity keeps the needs of the local community in mind.

Since being declared the UAE's first protected mountain area, continuous research has been carried out with the installation of camera traps. 56 new species have been found as recently as September 2011 including insects, arachnids and crustaceans: 26 of whom are considered new to science. The wadi also joined the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands which is of international importance for biodiversity conservation, demonstrating yet again that this area remains an important stronghold for wildlife in the UAE.
EWS-WWF Survey Highlights Need For Further Environmental Education

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, December, 2012: In a bid to uncover the depth of students' environmental knowledge, EWS-WWF conducted a survey across schools of students aged 6 – 15. The findings show an overall improvement in the level of children's environmental awareness after taking the online environmental education programme Be'ati Watani.

The results are encouraging compared to previous surveys by EWS-WWF and demonstrate that environmental education in schools is increasing students' understanding of the environment. According to the survey, more than 90% of junior students (ages 6 to 9) and 96% of senior students (aged 10 – 15) were able to recognise almost all desert animals.

Ajita Nayar , Education Manager at EWS-WWF said: "The results are very encouraging, and demonstrate the impact that environmental education can have in raising awareness about environmental issues among children. There is still more to be done to make sure that every child grows up with a solid understanding of the interdependency and the connectedness that we have with our natural environment. EWS-WWF recommends for schools and parents across the UAE to encourage youngsters to learn about the planet's natural ecosystems and the local wildlife; fuelling and nurturing their passion to protect the environment, as well as helping to instil a sense of ownership and pride in protection of UAE's distinctive biodiversity.

"Schools are making a dramatic difference in children's overall environmental understanding and through increased environmental education; students will be increasingly eager to take the initiative in conserving the environment and will be able to apply their learnings outside of the classroom. Environmental education in schools is extremely important given the state of our planet. Teachers and parents are in a unique position to help foster a lifetime of better environmental practice and understanding in the next generation, motivating them to become environmentally responsible citizens."

The survey found that junior students are clued up on questions relating to pollution and global warming with a high rate of positive answers (80-90%), as well as waste management with as many as 97% of students knew the 3 Rs, 'Reduce, Re-use, Recycle'.

In addition, 90% of junior students were aware of environment related activities happening in the UAE and a high of 92% were aware that greenhouse gases lead to global warming.

Mrs Nayar added; "The findings reflect a genuine interest in wildlife and environmental education, which is very positive and encouraging. In a bid to make learning about the environment fun, EWS-WWF launched its online environmental programme Be'ati Watani last year.

"This programme helps to lay the foundations of environmental awareness in youngsters by leading them on a journey of discovery to reach a greater understanding of the UAE environment and how to play an active role in protecting it. It is hoped that education initiatives, such as Be'ati Watani, will have an overall impact on students' interest in looking after our planet."

Be'ati Watani is designed to inspire children and young people to understand and be passionate about protecting the natural environment. It is created by EWS-WWF and sponsored by Dolphin Energy.

Learn more about Be'ati Watani by visiting: www.beatiwatani.com.

Eco-Schools UAE continues to inspire a new generation of eco-leaders

Dubai, October 22, 2012: Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) held a workshop for students and teachers from schools joining the Eco-Schools UAE programme at the Kempinski Hotel in Ajman. The bilingual workshop guided more than 100 students and teachers from 30 schools through Eco-Schools UAE to give them a better understanding of how they can work using the programme's framework to achieve their environmental endeavours.

Students that already gained the programme's prestigious award of a Green Flag in the previous academic year, shared their knowledge and ideas of environmental actions through short demonstrations at the workshop, focused on applying practical steps to lower their electricity usage, water consumption and waste generation.

Lisa Perry, Programmes Director at EWS-WWF commented: "At this workshop, we saw students offering ideas and words of inspiration to other schools about to embark on their own sustainability journeys. It was a unique opportunity to engage and motivate schools joining the programme to understand how they could implement their ideas into reality, using their own creativity.

"Eco-Schools UAE aims to empower students to act on their ideas for the benefit of the environment, and help bring their ideas into reality by encouraging whole school action. It is really important for schools to adopt sustainable lifestyles and help to lower their environmental impact."

Attendees also listened to motivational speeches from Dina Faid, Peter Milne and teacher Ahmed Al Za'abi on the importance of environmental awareness, applying environmental practices at home and nurturing creativity in schools.

Eco-Schools encourages teachers, parents and members of the local community to unite with students to lead the change towards a more sustainable world. Schools work to curb their carbon emissions by using the programme's seven-step methodology listed below, which they also need to successfully complete to achieve and be awarded with the prestigious Green Flag.

Step 1 – Eco-Schools Committee
Step 2 – Environmental review
Step 3 – Action plan
Step 4 – Monitoring and evaluation
Step 5 – Curriculum linking
Step 6 – Involving the wider community
Step 7 – Eco-Code (creation of a school's mission statement or motto on sustainability)

Eco-Schools is a programme of Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and in the UAE, Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) are the national operators of the programme. It is recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme as a model initiative on education for sustainable development and implemented by more than 50 FEE representatives in countries worldwide.

30 new schools will join Eco-Schools UAE this year thanks to sponsorship from BASF – The Chemical Company. Their volunteers attended the workshop, giving them the opportunity to interact with teachers and students.
The 30 schools that are already implementing the programme since 2011 will continue their journeys towards sustainability thanks to sponsorship from HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd.
