Monaco Gala, 2006
“We cannot go back in time. However, we can consider economic development in a different light, and put the notion of “protecting the planet” at the heart of each development project. It is essential to rise above political divisions and ask ourselves what measures we can take today for a development that is sustainable and respectful of nature.”
Raising awareness about the risks of global warming
On 11 and 12 May 2006 the Principality of Monaco organized a series of conferences and a gala evening to commemorate the centenary expeditions to The Arctic of Prince Albert 1st, the Great-Great-Grandfather of H.S.H. Prince Albert II. The events took place in Monaco at the Oceanographic Museum and the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club, Salle des Etoiles.
The commemorative expedition of Prince Albert II to the North Pole was undertaken in collaboration with WWF International and its Arctic Programme. The expedition launched a campaign aimed at raising public awareness about the risks of global warming and the dangers of industrial pollution, both of which are seriously impacting the Arctic.
The conferences and exhibition gathered together international specialists, historians and climatologists, who painted a broad picture of the issues that were underlined by the Prince’s Arctic expedition in April 2006. Some 600 guests attended the gala event, including 10 major donors of WWF International. During the evening, a generous donation was made to WWF International to help strengthen the climate change activities within its Arctic Programme.
