WWF Comments on APP Peat Announcement
The company has committed to restore and protect 1 million hectares, respectively of natural ecosystems in the general landscapes of their operations, in addition to government mandated conservation set-asides inside their concessions. These 7,000 ha are a first specific case of how APP will reach its 1 million ha target. WWF hopes many more hectares to follow soon and APP to succeed in the actual restoration.
WWF also hopes that APRIL follows APP’s example and retires concessions on fragile peat soils to meet its own 0.5 million hectares restoration target.
WWF welcomes the announced detailed LIDAR generated maps of Sumatra’s peatlands and hopes they will be transferred into the public domain soon. We all need to be able to better understand where urgent conservation action needs to be taken. These maps will likely prove invaluable for further conservation work across the island. Hopefully, the surveys can be expanded to cover the rest of the country’s peat soils.
