Eat in style – Know the origin: A joint mission to better Vietnam’s environment and consumers’ health

August 14th - 24th 2015, seafood certified as responsibly farmed in Vietnam will be officially available for the domestic market at many eateries. This is part of Sustainable Seafood Week 2015, organized by WWF-Vietnam, to introduce the world's newest trend in stylish dining: sustainability.
August 14th - 24th 2015, seafood certified as responsibly farmed in Vietnam will be officially available for the domestic market at many eateries. The certification denotes the seafood has met strict standards that ensure food safety and minimize environmental impact. This is part of Sustainable Seafood Week 2015, organized by WWF-Vietnam, to introduce the world's newest trend in stylish dining: sustainability.

In support of responsible production and products, which have gained worldwide popularity and become a significant indicator of a modern, healthy and positive lifestyle, the Sustainable Seafood Week with the message “Eat in style – Know the origin”, is urging Vietnamese consumers to join the international call for products from responsible sources.

During the 10 days, besides introducing Vietnam’s responsibly farmed seafood to the domestic market, the program will engage consumers in an array of exciting activities to raise awareness about sustainable seafood, through a display of informative artworks, a theme-inspired flash mob and exciting mini-games at Crescent Mall, District 7, Ho Chi Minh city. Consumers can visit www.cabenvung.vn to find the full list of restaurants participating in the program, and also pledge their support online to the demand for sustainable seafood in Vietnam.

“Consumers hold the power of demand and they can play an important role in transforming markets and industries to become more sustainable”, said Dr. Van Ngoc Thinh, Country Director, WWF-Vietnam. “When they speak together and buy together, it encourages the community of farmers and producers in Vietnam, that there is a domestic market, and they should continue striving and developing sustainable seafood. Consumers have the power to greatly contribute to the expansion of responsible seafood production, increasing standards on food safety and minimizing the sector’s environmental impacts.”

The ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) and MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) stamps are two of the most widely recognised international eco-labels which confirm that the seafood meet strict standards to benefit the environment, community and society.

Recent projects supported by WWF have greatly aided producers in the Mekong Delta to get their products certified. The number of Mekong Delta’s ASC-certified farms saw an almost nine-fold increase, from five farms in 2012 to 43 in 2014. Vietnam’s consumers, however, barely know of the existence and availability of these products, since most ASC and MSC certified seafood in Vietnam is exported and very little is available domestically.

Sustainable Seafood Week 2015 is part of WWF’s effort to raise consumers’ awareness on the seafood sector’s responsible practices in Vietnam. Through which, WWF looks forward to gathering key players of Vietnam’s seafood supply chain – from producers to the end users – in a joint mission to achieve the large-scale availability of internationally certified products in the domestic market in the near future, and thus better the country’s environment and consumers’ health.

“Sustainability might be on every company’s agenda, but when consumers don’t see the benefits of your responsibly-produced goods in comparison to regular ones, it’s easy to question the return on investment in such a thing” said Duong Ngoc Minh, General Director of Hung Vuong Corporation – a top seafood producer in Vietnam, and the supplier of ASC certified seafood during Sustainable Seafood Week 2015. “Responsible production is not enough without driving responsible consumption, especially in nowadays’ very competitive marketplace. Consumer engagement programs, like the Sustainable Seafood Week, would significantly promote the expansion of sustainable practices in Vietnam’s seafood sector.”
