Because walruses inhabit such remote and challenging habitat, collecting high quality data isn't cheap.
WWF supports walrus patrols in Russia. The patrols keep walrus haulouts safe from disturbances, and ward off polar bears attracted to the walruses (and nearby villages) for an easy meal. These patrols cost between €15,000 and €30,000 a year.
The WWF is able to meet these challenges and invent new ways to study walruses, like using satellite imagery to find and count walruses on shore through the support of people like you.
