Summary

The longline fishing industry targets the tuna fishery which contributes to the annual tuna production in the Philippines. Using lines extending to 20 kilometers and hooks to catch tuna, the fishery is reported to cause turtle mortalities through bycatch. However, data on the extent and severity of bycatch mortalities remains sparse. The project will investigate turtle bycatch through the use of longline gears and test turtle friendly alternatives such as circle hooks.

Objectives

- Invesigate longline turtle bycatch in the Philippines.

- Assess conservation priorities and opportunities.

- Approach and recruit priority fleets and build partnerships.

- Plan to test improvements to longline fishing gears, especially circle hooks.
