A milestone Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed on February 8th, 2018, committing five Thai organizations to strengthen collaboration on environmental conservation and security pillars through the advancement of an area-based sustainable consumption and production (SCP) to better contribute to food security, and protection of headwater streams in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The five-year Plan of Action involved organizations include WWF-Thailand, Chiang Mai Social Enterprise (CSE), Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives (BAAC), Thai Organic Agriculture Foundation and Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna.

In partnership, the five organizations will carry out joint activities to develop and promote sustainable agricultural practices within Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai, which will serve as solution models for other areas; restore and protect degraded agricultural and forest landscapes through sustainable land use as a means to minimize impact on the environment, society and economy; and encourage implementation of SCP principles within business models towards the promotion of sustainable food systems on the project-site area as agreed upon.

The MoU represents a significant step forward towards civil society participation through community forest governance and traceability monitoring platform towards sustainable consumption and production (SCP) to better connect producers and consumers, as well as the enhancement of a dialogue and knowledge exchange platform to harness innovative learning and capacity building methods.

Where farmers are expected to benefit from this active multilateral engagement, the organizations also aim to empower key agricultural producers and food business, as well as establishing cooperative sustainable market chains of local products to support farmers’ sales and other livelihood opportunities.

The WWF-Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
