This year Armenia again joined the Earth Hour global movement. WWF-Armenia together with the Ministry of Nature Protection, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Yerevan Municipality, Best Western Congress Hotel and Prometey Bank participated in the Earth Hour event which took place at 20:30-21:30 on March 29, 2014. The intent of the initiative was to bring together the public, private sector, communities and other stakeholders around the idea of switching off the lights for one hour in support for decisive action on climate change. In this regard a press conference with the representatives of the above mentioned authorities was held on the same day at 11:00am in Yerevan.

It should be noted that a number of other towns in Armenia had their active participation in the event, including Gyumri, Kapan, Vanadzor, Yeghegnadzor, Masis, Dilijan. Several private organizations also joined the action, such as Orange Armenia and Yerevan Brandy Company as well as Marriott Armenia, Hyatt Place and Erebuni hotels.

In 2014 more than 162 countries with 7000 cities were united for the Earth Hour initiative. In Yerevan the external lighting of buildings and the symbols of the city as well as the main street lights switched off for one hour.

As part of the initiative young activists with the support of WWF-Armenia organized a campaign with candles which started form the Opera House at 20:30 with the idea of involving the public in the event.

The Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 when 2 million people switched off their lights to show their support for action on climate change. Year by year the event is getting bigger and more popular by involving more than 1 billion people in the world.
