Dubai, UAE: March 24, 2014. With Earth Hour fast approaching on March 29 at 8.30pm, Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) is encouraging everyone to do their part by making the switch to energy efficient lighting. The environmental NGO is also asking the UAE community to help spread this sustainability message through the use of social media and the new phenomenon of ‘selfies’.

By taking a picture of yourself with an energy efficient bulb and posting it to social media using the hashtag #EarthHourSelfies, UAE residents can play a big part in raising awareness of the need to switch to energy efficient lighting. Earth Hour Selfies are fun, easy to do and are a great way to show support for the cause. Residents are also encouraged to learn more about energy efficient lighting through the EWS-WWF website.

Given that 20% of electricity consumed by households globally is used for lighting, by switching to energy efficient options including CFLs, LEDs and Halogen bulbs, the country can collectively help reduce its carbon emissions by 940,000 tonnes of CO2. That is equivalent to removing 165,000 cars off the road annually.
Join the Earth Hour UAE by:

1. Switching off your lights at 8.30pm on March 29
2. Making the switch to energy efficient lighting
3. Spreading awareness about the need to care for our planet by posting a photo of yourself with an energy efficient bulb to social media using the hashtag #EarthHourSelfie
EWS-WWF is active on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, especially in the lead up to Earth Hour.
