An unique WWF album of photographs of the Lower Danube and the Danube Delta was officially launched in Sofia today. The album contains 200 spectacular images of the last remaining free-flowing river in Europe. 14 photographers from Bulgaria, Romania, Austria and France contributed images to the album. The end result is an excellent portrait of the river with its incredible diversity of life. Besides the pictures, the album contains texts that sketch the history and natural heritage of this part of the Danube.

“The Lower Danube and Danube Delta are among WWF’s global list of the 200 most outstanding natural areas on the planet”, said Ivan Hristov, Freshwater Coordinator of WWF in Bulgaria. “They have been the focus of WWF’s conservation efforts for the past two decades. Much has been accomplished over this time and we wanted to introduce these remarkable placed to the general public. In a word, this book reveals not only the Danube’s beauty and natural treasures, but also some of the achievements of the past years”, Hristov said.

“At the same time, the EU and the local governments plan to improve navigation on the Danube, something that could threaten many of the river’s greatest treasures, especially on the Lower Danube. This is something we need to watch out for”.

“The Lower Danube” is a trilingual album featuring English, Romanian and Bulgarian language. The launch event, which was held at the National Gallery for Foreign Art in Sofia, was organized by WWF and the Embassy of Romania in Bulgaria. The event was hosted by the ambassador of Romania HE Anton Pacuretu. Other diplomats, including the ambassador of Denmark HE Kaare Janson and the ambassador of Serbia HE Alexander Tsarvenyakov, representatives of the government, the business and the media were also present.

The publication will be distributed free of charge throughout Europe. In Bulgaria, copies of the album will be presented to universities, libraries, cultural centers and others.
