Meeting development goals in the face of global environmental pressures

With the support of the European Commission, WWF and Oxfam hosted a roundtable in September 2012 with some members of the Cabinets in the European Commission, European External Action Service, DG Development Cooperation, DG Environment, Member State representatives, think tanks and international organisations.  The topics for debate included:
  • How should EU and global objectives to fight poverty and social injustice be taken forward while ensuring environmental sustainability?
  • Do natural resource constraints and planetary boundaries imply a new way of looking at development and economic growth?
  • How can the EU take a more integrated approach to its external agenda?
  • What are the implications of global environmental challenges for the debates on the post 2015 development framework?
The informal discussion covered issues such as the EU speaking with one voice; bringing together the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals; green economy thinking integrated throughout the economy; the necessity of “walking the talk” through EU actions.
