The Policy Officer position is full-time and will be based in Kiev, Ukraine. The officer will ensure the necessary support for WWF policy activities related to nature conservation in Ukraine, and also provide specialised input for regional policy initiatives and projects. The Policy Officer will report to the WWF Country Coordinator, and stay in close cooperation with the Conservation Coordinator in Ukraine.
Your duties will include:
  • Coordinate policy and advocacy/lobbying activities in Ukraine;
  • Collect data and information, as needed, and support the policy work;
  • Monitor continuously developments and opportunities related to environmental policy and legislative developments, in particular, related to protected areas, NATURA 2000, freshwater, climate change, forest and sustainable use of natural resources;
  • Review and amend from WWF perspective policy and legislative documents related to protected areas, NATURA 2000, freshwater, climate change, and forests, SDGs  (e.g. river basin management plans, flood risk management plans, spatial plans etc.) and sustainable use of natural resources;
  • Provide input to public consultations process;
  • Supervise mapping of key decision-makers, influencers, and partners on nature protection policies and identify possible partners for delivering advocacy plans;
  • Prepare and implement advocacy/lobbying plans for engagement with decision-makers and key-influencers in Ukraine;
  • Support adaptation of policy monitoring tools, set baseline for Ukraine, and monitor the progress;
  • Represent WWF at public hearings, meetings, seminars, conferences and workshops organized by WWF, partners or other organizations, when needed;
  • Advise and support other WWF staff in their policy advocacy/lobbying work;
  • Assisting in informing EU Commission staff on developments in Ukraine and in preparing complaint documents, if necessary;
  • Provide assistance (technical input) in the preparation of communication material to the Communication Officer in Ukraine;
  • Contribute to development of new projects proposals;
  • Contribute to the good functioning of WWF in Ukraine through participation in essential and daily activities as needed.
We expect from you:

  • Experience: Advanced qualifications and university degree (Conservation Biology, Environmental Policy or any other relevant fields) with over 5 years of working experience in environmental policy.
  • Knowledge: The Policy officer should have a good knowledge and understanding of the current situation in nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in Ukraine as well as environmental policy on national and international level. International experience is an advantage.
  • Skills and Abilities:  Diplomatic and cultural skills to work with a broad array of individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Strategic thinker.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in Ukrainian and fluency in English.
  • Ambition, energy and drive, with a commitment to making a difference
  • A team player, committed to building a strong team and sharing success with colleagues.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to meet deadlines strictly. Good networking and organizing skills
  • Commitment to WWF’s mission and priorities.
  • Experience with the issues and priorities of WWF, including e.g. environment and nature conservation, and work for an environmental organisation is an advantage but not a necessity
  • Ability to work in an international environment and within a multi-cultural team
