Dr Andrea Kohl takes helm of WWF European Policy Office

Dr Andrea Kohl, previously Deputy Director, took over the leadership of the WWF European Policy Office today, following the departure of Director Geneviève Pons. Acting as transitional Director, Kohl will be responsible for heading the office of around 40 permanent staff representing WWF’s interests towards the European institutions. She will also continue in her role of Programme Director.

An agronomist by training, Andrea Kohl joined WWF Germany in 2001 as head of the conservation department and member of the management team. She then moved to WWF EU as Programme Director and Deputy Director in 2006.

“This is a critical time for environmental NGOs in Europe, and WWF is well positioned to resist the attempts at weakening EU environmental legislation, and to ensure that EU policies across all sectors fully embrace and support the overarching principle of sustainable development,” said Kohl. “I am looking forward to continuing and strengthening WWF’s visibility and effectiveness on the European scene, and also to reinforcing links with WWF offices across Europe.”

“Andrea’s deep understanding of European policy and her passion for WWF’s mission will ensure the continuation of our influential work with European institutions at a time when strong European leadership is needed, more than ever, to address the pressing global challenges our society is facing, while also capitalizing on the huge opportunities for change to create an environmentally sustainable future,” said Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International.

Andrea Kohl will be acting Director until the recruitment of a permanent office holder is concluded.
