WWF, KfW, IDEA and Azerbaijan gov’t make case for natural capital investment

Baku, Azerbaijan – The conservation organisation, World Wide Fund for Nature, in partnership with KfW Development Bank, the International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA) and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan will hold a high level joint event on 2 May 2015, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm, HAC Building 2, Room B6 as part of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Annual Meeting.
Entitled Sustainable Financing and Economic Benefits of Nature Protection in the Southern Caucasus, the occasion will bring together a team of experts who will make the case for the economic and social benefits of investing in the natural capital in the Southern Caucasus. They will also share best practices in innovative financing solutions for conservation, and discuss how these can contribute to economic development. The panel will explore topics such as:
  • Sustainable infrastructure (hydropower and linear infrastructure)
  • “Green development” e.g. job creation trough sustainable tourism
  • Leveraging private sector investments for conservation
  • Climate change mitigation
  • Valuation of ecosystem services in the framework of planning
Panellists include Farid Jafarov, IDEA’s Leading Specialist; Giorgi Sanadiradze, WWF Caucasus’ Representative; Arzu Samadova, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan’s Senior Adviser of the Department for Protection of Biodiversity and Development of PAs; Lars Oermann, Representative for KfW Caucasus; and Mario Sander, Alternate ED  for the ADB Board.
The dialogue will be moderated by Nessim Ahmad, ADB’s Deputy Director General for the Regional and Sustainable Development Department, concurrently Chief Compliance Officer.
The event is part of the Learning with Partners 1 session at the ADB’s 48th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors.
