29 March 2015
Azerbaijan joined Earth Hour global campaign for the fifth time. Each year hundreds of people come together to celebrate this global movement in order to attract attention to different global and regional environmental problems in Azerbaijan.

WWF-Azerbaijan, İDEA Public Union and Green Baku participated in the Earth Hour-2015 event which took part on 28 March, at 20:30 on Freedom Square in Baku. More than 450 people came together to celebrate the event. On the night,  over 16 landmarks switched off the lights for an hour, including Governmental Institutions, Heydar Aliyev Center, Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Marriott Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel, and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Palace of the Shirvanshahs  and Maiden Tower.  Beside this the event was followed by candle installation of the 60+ logo and a night cycling tour in the city.

In 2015, a year of record participation, individuals, businesses, city skylines and landmarks in 172 countries and territories switched off their lights to participate in the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. Over 1,400 landmarks switched off the lights this day including the Empire State Building and the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Hong Kong’s iconic skyline. Close to 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Acropolis in Athens, the walled city of Baku, the Cologne Cathedral and the Galapagos Islands also participated.
“Earth Hour” campaign has firstly been launched by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Australia in 2007 to show their support for action on climate change. The aim of the campaign is to draw public attention to the concerns of the climate change. Year by year the event is getting bigger and more popular by involving more than 1 billion people in the world.

This year IDEA PU which was granted the status of official national coordinator by WWF has initiated this event in Azerbaijan. It is gratifying that the civil society is taking over the organization of WWF’s global scale events.
