Following the development of the training module on climate change and forest transformation in the Southern Caucasus, WWF Caucasus Programme Office launched one day training on February 20, 2014 in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The training was organized as part of the EU financed project Increasing the resilience of forest ecosystems against climate change in the Southern Caucasus through forest transformation and it was leaded by an international consultant Dirk Frankenhauser, PanForestal, Berlin - service provider to WWF.

One day event hosted by the Ilia State University aimed, inter alia, at strengthening representative character of the training, that, in turn, created interactive experience sharing and innovative learning opportunities for more than fifty forestry professionals and representatives of other interested parties from Forest Policy Service of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Forest Agency of Georgia, UNDP/Georgia's team on Third National Communication to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), USAID Project team on Climate Change Adaptation/NALAG - National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Mercy Corps Georgia, Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia, Georgian Centre for Biodiversity Conservation and Research - NACRES, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) team at Ilia State University, Adaptive Sustainable Forest Management Planning team of Österreichische Bundesforste (ÖBf)/BFW and, most importantly, to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students and professors from Tbilisi State University - TSU (, Agricultural University of Georgia (, State University of Telavi (, Guram Tavatrtkiladze Teaching University (, University of Georgia ( and Ilia State University (

The first part of the training primarily addressed the climate change global situation, European response to climate change and current situation in the South Caucasus and Georgia. The second part focused on adaptation implementation options for the South Caucasus, presentation of European case studies and the core part of the training - training exercises. At the closing stage, participants were invited to brainstorm of what they considered to be needed in future and next steps that required in order to introduce or improve climate change related forestry risk management systems in Georgia.

As a result, the training proved to be a representative and effective platform providing for sharing good practice and developing new ideas and facilitating learning and discussion around climate change and forestry topics.
