Transboundary cooperation at work - Gazelles are coming back to Georgia
In recent years, the situation in the project area, a large part of the historical range of the gazelle, has been significantly improved with respect to gazelle re-introduction: the network of protected areas - a wildlife habitat of the gazelle has been expanded continuously, measures to improve the management of protected areas conducted, initial experience with the reintroduction of the gazelle in the field is available and in both countries the project is supported on the highest political level.
On 21st of October 2013 the official ceremony of re-introduction of gazelles was held and the translocation of the first herd of gazelles from Shirvan NP in Azerbaijan to Vashlovani NP in Georgia has been started.
Gazelles in new areas will be GPS collared, allowing to monitor the behavior, range use, migration and other ecological characteristics of reintroduced population. This will help scientists to find out most favorable gazelle habitats and use collected data for establishing (if needed) of new Protected Areas and optimizing borders of existing ones.
