Climate change is happening faster, more intensely and often at unprecedented rates of change according to the Fifth Assessment Working Group 1 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Samantha Smith, WWF’s Climate and Energy Initiative leader said we must act urgently now or face frightening new impacts. Since the last major IPCC report in 2007, terrestrial glacier loss and sea level rise have greatly accelerated and Arctic sea ice loss is higher than projected. Acidification of the ocean has increased, which, together with ocean warming, poses huge threats to marine ecosystems including coral reefs. WWF calls on governments and investors to shift investments away from fossil fuels causing climate change to safe renewable energy sources.
