Visit to the Pilot Site of the EU Funded Project
The aim of the visit was to demonstrate the results of the field activities carried out to-date and to provide information about the project’s on-going and planned activities.
The field visit was attended by about 30 participants from various state entities, international organizations and journalists. The representatives of the RA Ministry of Agriculture, “Hayantar” SNCO, “Zikatar Environmental Center” SNCO under the RA Ministry of Nature Protection, UNDP/GEF SGP, FPWC, ATP foundation, Ecolur, Econews and other organizations were present at the event.
The field forest transformation activities were observed by the field visit participants. Information about the current state of the project, activities implemented so far and other related issues were presented by the project staff. The discussions and Q&A sessions with WWF Armenia staff, “Hayantar” SNCO representatives were held, including with the Chief Forester Mr. Ruben Petrosyan and Noyemberyan FE Director Mr. Vasil Chilingaryan. The field workers also participated. Interviews were held with respective representatives.
The project in Armenia is implemented by WWF Armenia and is aimed at increasing the resilience of forest stands against climate change. The overall objective of the project is to mitigate climate change impacts and improve biodiversity and livelihoods of local populations. Two pilot sites with total area of 150 ha located in Gugarq and Noyemberyan Forest Enterprises of “Hayantar” SNCO (respectively Lori and Tavush regions of Armenia) will be transformed into more resilient and “close to nature” forests. The fencing of pilot sites was finalized at the end of 2012. Forest transformation activities were started in autumn 2012 and will be finalised in spring 2014. They are implemented by “Hayantar” SNCO of the RA Ministry of Agriculture.
