Implementing in Armenia the EU Financed Regional Project on Increasing the Resilience of Forest Ecosystems

December 29, 2011 -- WWF-Armenia Director, Mr. Karen Manvelyan and Director of “Hayantar” State Non-Commercial Organization (SNCO) of the Ministry of Agriculture, RA, Mr. Martun Matevosyan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on transformation of 150 ha of monoculture forest area in Noyemberyan (78 ha) and Gugarq (72 ha) Forest Enterprises of “Hayantar” SNCO into resilient to climate change forest stands close to natural conditions.

The Memorandum was signed in the premises of Head Office of “Hayantar” SNCO under the auspices of the EU financed regional project "Increasing the Resilience of Forest Ecosystems against Climate Change in the Southern Caucasus through Forest Transformation" (DCI-ENV/2010/221391) implemented by WWF, and aimed to increase resilience of monoculture forest stands against climate change. The addendum to MoU of December 2011 was signed in May 2012, where some changes in the maps of selected pilot areas were agreed and approved (Annex 1). The overall objective of the project is to mitigate climate change impacts and to improve biodiversity and livelihoods of local populations.
