Empowering Rural Communities to Manage Wildlife: Lessons learned from WWF-SARPO's Support to CAMPFIRE Project 1993-2002

Posted on 01 October 2007
The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyse an alternative, technological approach to empowering rural communities to manage wildlife and associated resources.

The analysis builds on the lessons learned from nearly 10 years of implementing the WWF Support to CAMPFIRE Project within the framework of Zimbabwe's communal areas management programme for indigenous resources, CAMPFIRE. In our view, the experiences and the lessons learned from this project have a wider and more general applicability in terms of developing tools for dis-empowered communities to manage their natural resources.
